Explore how to sell a non-running car in South Africa: compare buyer types, process steps, legal requirements and tips to maximise your cash offer.
If your car has suffered extensive mechanical failure, been written off after an accident, or simply won't start, you're likely searching for trusted ways to sell a non-running vehicle. In South Africa, options range from specialist car-buying services to direct sales, dealers, and scrap yards. This guide breaks down each route, what to expect, and how to choose the right process for your needs.
A non-running (or 'non-starter') car is any vehicle that cannot be driven under its own power due to accident damage, engine or gearbox failure, electrical issues, or other critical mechanical problems. This includes:
Each method to sell a non-running vehicle comes with unique benefits and drawbacks. Below is a comparison of the most common channels in South Africa.
| Sale Option | Ease | Expected Offer | Paperwork Provided | Towing Included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Specialist Car-Buyers (e.g. Sell Your Damaged Car) |
High | Competitive (based on salvage/parts market) |
Yes | Yes, free nationwide |
| Private Sale | Low | Variable | No (seller responsible) |
No |
| Scrap Yard/Metal Dealer | Medium | Low (value per kilogram) |
Minimal | Sometimes |
| Trade-In at Dealership | Low-Medium | Reduced (if accepted) |
Yes, if trade is successful | Rarely |
Deciding whether to repair or sell your non-running car depends on repair costs, likely resale value, and your risk tolerance. In most cases, if repairs cost over 60% of the car's market value, selling is usually more practical.
| Repair Cost (R) | Vehicle Value (R) | % Value Retained | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| R80,000 | R100,000 | 20% | Sell |
| R20,000 | R100,000 | 70% | Repair |
| R60,000 | R85,000 | 29% | Sell |
Specialist services like Sell Your Damaged Car are designed to help South Africans sell non-running vehicles in cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and their surrounds with minimal hassle. Here's how the process typically works:
After free collection, your non-running vehicle will be assessed and processed-either for spares, salvage or recycling. You'll typically receive confirmation of deregistration, and your payment should reflect soon thereafter. Vehicles with outstanding finance are handled based on bank procedures, with funds paid accordingly.
The salvage market in South Africa is vibrant, with high demand for usable spares and parts from older vehicle models. Using a specialist service connects your vehicle directly with this demand, helping you avoid lower offers from general scrap dealers and the administrative burden of a private sale.
