Discover how scrap car values are calculated, what impacts cash offers, legal paperwork steps, and tips to get a fair deal when selling your scrapped car.
If your car is beyond repair, written-off, or classified as a salvage vehicle, one of your first questions is: What is a fair price when selling it for scrap? Determining an accurate, transparent value for scrapped vehicles in South Africa is crucial, whether you're a private owner, part of a business fleet, or an insurer. Offers vary widely depending on the vehicle's age, type, damage, and current demand for parts or scrap metal. This guide breaks down how fair value is calculated and how to make an informed decision when selling to a reputable buyer like Sell Your Damaged Car.
| Vehicle Status | Estimated Repair Cost (R) | Market Value After Repair (R) | Likely Scrap Offer (R) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light accident damage (repairable) | 25 000 | 45 000 | 18 000 - 25 000 |
| Total loss (major damage) | 90 000+ | 60 000 | 9 000 - 15 000 |
| Non-running/engine seized | 60 000 | 50 000 | 7 000 - 12 000 |
Figures above are based on Gauteng and Western Cape averages in 2023; actual values depend on exact vehicle model, year, and market demand. Your scrap offer will always be lower than post-repair value due to the cost and risk the buyer assumes.
| Damage Type | Offer Impact |
|---|---|
| Frame/bodyshell bent | Major deduction, core value is for metal |
| Engine non-running | Moderate, value in parts if rest intact |
| Stripped (missing wheels, battery, etc.) | Substantial deduction, value drops further |
| Interior/electronics fire | Reduces parts salvage, may lower offer |
Trusted scrap buyers will explain their calculations and factor in admin costs (such as deregistration, which is required by the Road Traffic Act for scrapped vehicles). Payment terms should be clearly documented before collection. Inquire about how non-runner, stripped, or incomplete vehicles affect final pricing.
By understanding the valuation process, legal context, and the dynamics of the South African scrap market, you empower yourself to secure a fair offer and a seamless transaction.
