Explore South Africa's leading online car value tools, how to use them accurately for damaged or non-running vehicles, and tips on navigating the process.
Knowing the real market value of your car-whether it's running perfectly or has accident, mechanical, or flood damage-is crucial for every South African vehicle owner looking to sell. Online car value estimation tools have made the process quicker and more transparent than ever, giving sellers important information that can help them secure a fair deal. For those with damaged, non-starting, or salvage vehicles, an online valuation also provides realistic expectations before making decisions about repair or sale.
Online car value tools use recent market data, vehicle registration information, and condition reports to calculate an estimated resale or trade-in value. Typically, sellers are asked to input basic details-make, model, year, mileage, and notes on condition-plus photos if possible. Some platforms can factor in specifics such as accident history, non-runner status, or whether a car is still under finance.
Leading South African brands and independent services offer valuation calculators that support both standard and damaged vehicles. Tools like the TransUnion Car Value Report, Book Value Solutions, and buy-instantly specialists like Sell Your Damaged Car all simplify the task of checking your car's potential cash offer range.
| Tool | Supports Damaged/Non-Running? | Free to Use? | Notable Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell Your Damaged Car | Yes | Yes | SA salvage + damaged, photo upload, instant offer |
| TransUnion Car Value Report | No (Standard market value only) | No (Fee applies) | Trusted by dealers, standard condition, official data |
| Book Value Solutions | Partial (Limited for damaged) | No (Fee or registration) | Central source for SA book values |
| Online Auto Buying Services | Yes | Yes | Direct offers for all conditions |
If your car is accident-damaged, a non-runner, or a write-off, it's essential to use a valuation tool that explicitly asks for the level of damage. Standard "book" values assume running, roadworthy cars and may not reflect realistic resale prices if major repairs are needed.
For many South Africans with damaged or non-running cars in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, or elsewhere, online estimators are the first step before deciding to sell or repair. Here's how to make the most of them:
| Damage Type | Offer Range vs Book (%) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minor Cosmetic | 80-90% | Light dents, scratches; easy fix |
| Mechanical Issue (Running) | 60-80% | Engine/gearbox faults; car starts |
| Accident Damage (Not Roadworthy) | 40-60% | Panel replacement needed, repair costs high |
| Non-Runner or Write-Off | 20-50% | Severe engine or chassis issues, salvage only |
(Estimates above are typical for the South African market, based on current salvage and auction data. Actual offers may vary by location and demand.)
No matter how you value your car online, selling in South Africa requires up-to-date ownership documents, ID, proof of address, and bank details for payment. If the car is written off or being deregistered, you'll need supporting paperwork for the Department of Transport or your insurer. Many online buyers, including Sell Your Damaged Car, simplify these legal requirements and offer free collection (with paperwork) nationwide.
Once you approve an online quote, typical steps include official ID/ownership confirmation, arranging free towing, and the handling of deregistration or settlement (where applicable). Reputable buyers verify payment as soon as collection is completed-ask about expected timelines and request proof before finalising the transfer.
