Learn how damaged car buyers value vehicles, what services they include (free towing, paperwork), legal steps in SA and tips to get a transparent cash offer.
When you search for what to expect from damaged car buyers, you want clear information: how offers are calculated, what services are included, and what obligations you retain. Specialist buyers (like Sell Your Damaged Car) purchase vehicles in any condition-accident-damaged, flood or fire affected, non-running, or written off-and handle the logistics that private buyers often won't.
Expect a process focused on speed and transparency: an online valuation based on the vehicle details and photos you provide, a written cash offer, optional collection (usually free), handling of transfer and deregistration where applicable, and payment once paperwork and collection are complete. Offers depend on the vehicle's pre-damage market value, the extent of damage, salvageable parts demand, and any outstanding finance.
| Repair estimated | Typical impact on private sale value | When a buyer makes more sense |
|---|---|---|
| Minor dents & panel work (R3,000-R10,000) | Small reduction in resale price; private sale often viable | If vehicle otherwise roadworthy and no structural damage |
| Significant structural/airbag repairs (R20,000+) | Large reduction; buyers may offer salvage value instead | When repair costs approach or exceed resale value |
| Non-running or engine failure (R15,000+) | Private sale limited; selling to specialist buyers often faster | If you need quick cash and free towing |
Note: figures above are illustrative R ranges based on typical South African repair costs and market behaviour. Exact offers vary by vehicle and region (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas have different salvage demand).
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on cost, urgency, and the vehicle's long-term value. If repair estimates are a significant percentage of the car's pre-accident market value, or if the car has been declared a write-off, selling to a specialist buyer is often the lower-effort, lower-risk option.
Examples: For older cars where repairs exceed 40-50% of market value, many owners choose to sell. For late-model vehicles with minor repairs, repair may retain more value. For non-running fleet vehicles, bulk-selling to a buyer who handles towing and paperwork can save time and admin expenses.
Most reputable damaged car buyers follow a similar online-to-collection flow:
Expect the buyer to assist with or handle deregistration and transfer where appropriate. If the vehicle is under finance, South African law requires the finance provider to be informed and often settled before ownership can transfer; a reputable buyer will guide this step and can liaise with the lender. Keep documentation ready: RSA ID, vehicle registration document, and finance account details if relevant.
| Damage type | Typical effect on offer |
|---|---|
| Superficial panel & paint | Small reduction; higher resale potential after minor work |
| Structural/frame and airbag deployment | Significant reduction; often classified as written-off |
| Flood or fire damage | Large reduction; many buyers value parts or scrap separately |
| Mechanical failure/non-running | Offers based on salvageable parts and tow cost; free towing increases appeal |
After the vehicle is collected, the buyer completes transfer and deregistration steps where applicable and releases payment as agreed. For vehicles under finance, settlement with the lender is arranged and any shortfall is addressed in writing. Keep copies of transfer paperwork and payment confirmation for your records.
