Learn how repairs and past vehicle damage affect resale value in South Africa, plus tips to estimate worth, document repairs, and maximise your offer.
If your vehicle has been in an accident or suffered damage and you've invested in repairs, you may be wondering how that history affects your car's resale value. For South African car owners, knowing how to fairly estimate your repaired vehicle's worth is crucial-especially when considering whether to keep, trade-in, or sell privately or through a service like Sell Your Damaged Car.
| Example Scenario | Repair Cost (R) | Value Recovered | % of Original Value Retained* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bumper & Paint Damage (Minor) | 6,000 | Most (80-90%) | ~90% |
| Suspension & Panel (Moderate) | 18,000 | Good (65-75%) | ~70% |
| Major Structural Repair | 58,000 | Low (50-60%) | ~55% |
*Estimates only; factors include type/severity, repair documentation, and buyer confidence.
If major repairs are uneconomical, you may wish to get a transparent salvage offer from a specialized buyer. See Sell Damaged Cars for more details.
| Damage Type (After Repair) | Typical Resale Value Reduction* | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic only (e.g. scratches, minor dents) | 5-10% | Minimal if high-quality repairs are evident |
| Panel replaced, non-structural | 10-20% | Buyers still wary if accident declared |
| Major mechanical (e.g. engine repaired) | 20-35% | Depends on age, proof of professional work |
| Structural/previous write-off | 30-50% | Major trust and insurability issues |
*Estimates vary by brand/model and market cycles. Code 3/4 status significantly affects value and insurability in South Africa.
With services like Sell Your Damaged Car, once you accept an offer and hand over the car, collection is arranged at your location (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, etc.), paperwork is handled, and payment processed swiftly. If selling privately or trading in, ensure all records are exchanged and any liability or deregistration with NaTIS is completed.
