Learn how to deregister an accident-damaged vehicle in South Africa, what admin and licence fees to expect, and how to simplify the paperwork process.
If your car's been written off after an accident, or is no longer roadworthy due to severe damage, it legally needs to be deregistered with your local provincial licensing authority. Deregistration takes your car off the National Register of Vehicles, preventing further license renewals and transfer of ownership for public road use. This process is required for vehicles classified as 'permanently unfit' following accidents, floods, fires, or major mechanical failures.
| Fee Description | Estimated Range (R) | When Payable |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding registration/licence fees | Varies, often R250-R2,500+ | If unpaid at deregistration |
| Deregistration admin fee | R80-R130 | When submitting application |
| Police clearance (if required) | R0-R500 | For suspected VIN/tampering cases |
| Roadworthy certificate (if dereg withdrawing for resale/repair*) | R500-R800 | Only if vehicle to be relicensed |
*Note: Vehicles deregistered as 'scrapped' or 'permanently unfit' cannot be relicensed for road use without extensive inspections and compliance. When selling for salvage, a roadworthy certificate is not required.
If your damaged vehicle is under finance (e.g., bank, MFC, WesBank), it's crucial to first obtain written settlement or permission from your finance provider before beginning the deregistration process. Deregistration is typically not allowed unless the finance house's settlement is received and the titleholder releases the vehicle, even after total loss. Always clarify with your credit provider before proceeding.
SA-registered vehicle owners can check detailed steps and required forms via their regional eNaTIS portal or visit a local licensing department. Many reputable salvage dealers also offer deregistration as part of the buying process, including free collection and admin assistance.
