Learn how to sell your non-running car in South Africa with a simple, transparent process: get an online offer, free towing, and full paperwork support.
When your car stops running - whether from mechanical failure, accident, or chronic issues - selling it can seem stressful. Fortunately, specialised services like Sell Your Damaged Car offer South African vehicle owners a practical alternative to the time and costs of repairs or lengthy private sales. This guide outlines each stage of the process, what paperwork you need, and how to avoid common pitfalls for a smooth, reliable sale.
Owners often face the tough choice: invest in repairs, or sell as is? Deciding factors typically include the age of the vehicle, extent of mechanical or accident damage, and current market value. If repair costs approach (or exceed) the car's resale value, selling it as a non-runner is often the most sensible option.
| Scenario | Average Repair Cost (R) | Value Retained After Repair (R) |
|---|---|---|
| Blown engine (10+ years old sedan) | 35,000 - 70,000 | 30,000 - 45,000 |
| Automatic transmission failure | 20,000 - 50,000 | 20,000 - 40,000 |
| Serious accident damage (repairable) | 50,000 - 120,000 | 30,000 - 80,000 |
As shown, in many real-world situations, repair costs for non-running vehicles are not always recoverable through subsequent resale, especially when factoring in additional expenses such as towing, diagnosis, and lost time.
Companies like Sell Your Damaged Car provide a transparent process specifically designed to minimise hassle and ensure peace of mind for sellers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond.
| Type of Damage | Reduced Value (%) |
|---|---|
| Major engine failure | 60-80 |
| Structural accident damage | 40-70 |
| Flood or electrical system damage | 50-85 |
| Cosmetic/non-safety issues | 10-30 |
These figures represent typical reductions against undamaged market value, taking the South African salvage market into account. Actual offers will also reflect demand for parts, current trends and make/model specifics.
Selling a non-running car entails several key documents:
Taking these steps speeds up payment and ensures there are no administrative holdups after collection.
Following vehicle pickup (free of charge nationwide), you'll receive confirmation of transfer, and the vehicle is deregistered, removing it from your name at the licensing department. Payment is typically processed as agreed - most services, including Sell Your Damaged Car, offer same-day or next-business-day transfer of funds upon verified collection and paperwork completion.
The non-running car may be dismantled for parts, resold into the salvage market, or, in some cases, repaired if viable. Either way, your obligations as owner end with deregistration and confirmation of payment - ensuring full legal compliance within South Africa.
