Discover how salvage car value is determined in South Africa, what influences your cash offer, and the best practices for selling your damaged vehicle quickly and fairly.
A salvage car in South Africa typically refers to a vehicle that has been written off by an insurance company due to accidents, severe damage, or theft recovery. These cars are often no longer deemed roadworthy without significant repairs. If you have a damaged vehicle, understanding its salvage value is essential before deciding to sell or repair.
| Scenario | Average Repair Cost (R) | Market Value After Repair (R) | Typical Salvage Value (R) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor Front-End Damage | 25,000-40,000 | 90,000 | 35,000-45,000 |
| Engine Seizure | 50,000+ | 75,000 | 30,000-38,000 |
| Severe Accident/Write-off | 70,000+ | N/A | Varies, usually 10-25% of retail |
*Figures are estimates based on South African panel beater averages and salvage industry data as of 2024.
If repair costs approach or exceed your car's market value, selling as a salvage vehicle is usually more cost-effective. This is especially true for older models, high-mileage cars, or vehicles with irreparable structural or electrical faults. Many South Africans choose to sell for salvage rather than risk further expenses or deal with long repair timelines.
| Damage Type | Expected Offer (as % of Book Value) |
|---|---|
| Mechanical Failure (Non-running) | 30% - 50% |
| Accident Damage (Repairable) | 35% - 55% |
| Severe Structural Damage | 10% - 30% |
| Fire/Flood Damage | 15% - 25% |
Offers vary based on age, model, mileage, and prevailing market demand for spares. Always supply accurate details for the most reliable valuation.
After your car is removed, the salvage company will handle deregistration and final payment confirmation. Cars are then assessed for dismantling, resale of usable parts, or responsible scrapping. This ensures compliance with South African laws and reduces your risk of later liability or scams.
