Find detailed, South Africa-specific answers to the most common questions about selling a damaged or non-running car in Cape Town - paperwork, collection, payment & more.
If you're a Cape Town car owner dealing with accident damage, serious mechanical failure, or a vehicle that's been written off, you may be wondering about your options. Whether it's a private sedan or a small business fleet vehicle, selling your damaged car is often the fastest way to recover value and avoid the hassle of ongoing repairs, storage, and admin headaches. At Sell Your Damaged Car, we simplify the process for all Cape Town residents, purchasing vehicles of any make, model, or condition - accident-damaged, non-runners, water/flood and fire-affected cars included.
Anyone with legal ownership of a vehicle registered in South Africa can sell. This includes private individuals, companies, or small business fleets. If the car is under finance, please check with your lender regarding settlement or transfer requirements.
You'll typically need:
We help you with all paperwork, including Cape Town deregistration and notifications to the relevant authorities.
Yes. We arrange free collection from anywhere in Cape Town, including areas like Bellville, Claremont, Milnerton, Goodwood, and beyond to the Cape Winelands or Somerset West. There are no hidden towing fees.
You upload your car's details and photos online. Our team reviews these, considering make, model, year, mileage, type and extent of damage, and South African salvage market demand. You'll receive a cash offer with no obligation to accept.
Yes, but we evaluate every vehicle case-by-case. Impact damage, fire, or water exposure can have different effects on value. See the table below:
| Damage Type | Impact on Offer | Common in Cape Town? |
|---|---|---|
| Accident (bodywork/chassis) | Moderate to significant | Yes |
| Flood/Water Damage | High (often major electrical issues) | Occasional (esp. winter or coastal flooding) |
| Engine/Mechanical Failure | Moderate | Yes |
| Fire Damage | Significant | Rare, but possible |
| Body Panel Rust/Corrosion | Minor to moderate | Moderately common (coastal) |
Once you accept our offer, we aim to collect your car (with free towing) within 24-72 hours. All necessary paperwork is completed on collection, and payment is validated and released to your bank immediately - no waiting for funds to clear or for buyers to show up.
We handle Cape Town deregistration (submission of forms to the City and eNatis system), provide seller proof of transaction, and ensure the vehicle is properly transferred/scrapped. This protects you from liability, fines, or unwanted license renewal notices.
We can look at cars with outstanding finance, but the settlement process must be managed transparently. If your car is financed, please provide your bank's settlement letter so we can work together to settle the account and process ownership transfer.
The answer depends on repair costs versus your car's current market value, especially for older models or when insurance doesn't cover repairs. Compare estimates using the sample table below:
| Repair Cost (R) | Expected Resale Value After Repair (R) | Net Value Retained (R) | Alternative: Sell As-Is? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25,000 | 22,000 | -3,000 | Yes |
| 18,000 | 25,000 | 7,000 | Maybe |
| 50,000 | 30,000 | -20,000 | Yes |
If repairs exceed the potential resale value, selling your car as-is to a specialist is usually the practical choice.
You'll receive a receipt for the sale, proof of deregistration, and verification of payment. Your car is then responsibly processed through approved SA salvage or recycling, keeping your details secure and legal requirements fulfilled.
