Struggling with a non-running car due to engine failure? Sell Your Damaged Car buys SA non-runners in any condition, offers free nationwide collection, and manages the admin for you.
If your car is sitting idle due to serious engine problems-be it seized, overheating, knocking, or total failure-you're not alone. Many South African vehicle owners face unexpected engine issues that turn reliable cars into non-runners overnight. Traditional repair costs can be high, and finding private buyers for such cars can be extremely difficult.
Sell Your Damaged Car specialises in buying non-running vehicles across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and beyond, no matter the extent of engine damage. We offer a straightforward solution that cuts out the hassles of towing, paperwork, and lowball offers.
Facing a non-starting car, most owners wonder: 'Is it worth fixing, or is selling the smarter move?' Here's a helpful table comparing repair costs with typical resale value retained for engine-failed vehicles in South Africa:
| Engine Failure Type | Avg. Repair Cost (R) | Value Added After Repair (R) | Typical Retained Value (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Seizure | 35,000 - 80,000 | 25,000 - 60,000 | 30% - 60% |
| Cylinder Head Damage | 20,000 - 45,000 | 15,000 - 40,000 | 35% - 65% |
| Major Oil Leak | 8,000 - 18,000 | 5,000 - 15,000 | 40% - 70% |
As the table shows, repair costs in SA rand can quickly approach or exceed what you may recover in resale value, especially for older or higher-mileage vehicles.
Tip: For non-running cars, selling to a specialist buyer often results in a net-positive outcome, especially when you factor in towing and fast payment.
Transferring ownership or deregistering a non-runner with engine issues comes with specific South African administrative requirements. As part of our service, Sell Your Damaged Car manages the following:
We recommend only working with buyers who provide official documentation and proof of payment, ensuring your legal responsibility as a seller ends once your car is collected.
| Engine Problem | Impact on Offer |
|---|---|
| Seized/Blown Engine | Lower offer, based mainly on salvageable body and parts value. |
| Partial Failure (e.g., Overheating) | Moderate reduction, but higher than full non-runner if repair is feasible. |
| Minor Engine Faults | Higher offer, especially if the rest of the car is in good condition. |
