Struggling with an engine-damaged car? Get a fair cash offer, free towing, and complete admin support. Sell your non-running car anywhere in South Africa today.
Engine failure is one of the costliest types of car damage faced by South African owners. Whether it's catastrophic engine failure, a blown head gasket, seized components, or chronic overheating, repairing major engine faults can be uneconomical. Many private buyers and dealers shy away from engine-damaged vehicles, making a straightforward sale difficult. Fortunately, specialist buyers like Sell Your Damaged Car provide fair valuation and easy solutions - no need for costly repairs, drawn-out sales, or complicated transport logistics.
Deciding whether to repair or sell starts with comparing realistic repair costs versus the car's retained value after repair. If your car is older, out of warranty, or already has high mileage, engine repairs may exceed its resale value. Use the following table for common scenarios in South Africa:
| Engine Fault | Typical Repair Cost (R) | % Value Retained After Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Blown Head Gasket | 10,000 - 18,000 | 30-45% |
| Rebuilt/Replacement Engine | 20,000 - 60,000+ | 40-60% |
| Seized Engine | 15,000 - 55,000 | 35-50% |
If repair costs approach or exceed your car's value, selling it as engine-damaged is often the most practical option. Many owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounds face steep towing or storage costs if their vehicle is immobilised, further reducing the benefits of a repair attempt.
Unlike many dealerships or online classifieds, Sell Your Damaged Car buys vehicles with serious engine issues in any state: running, non-running, or fully immobilised.
Our process is designed to take the stress out of dealing with a non-running or engine-damaged car. No need for towing quotes or waiting on unreliable buyers. We buy directly from private owners and business fleets, with full transparency.
Transferring ownership of an engine-damaged car follows normal South African road laws. The key steps you'll encounter include:
Our team manages all paperwork, helping you avoid queues and confusion. For cars still under finance, we work with the financial institution to ensure settled, legal transfer.
| Engine Damage Type | Typical Offer Impact (%) |
|---|---|
| Blown Head Gasket | -30% to -50% |
| Complete Engine Seizure | -40% to -60% |
| Minor Oil Leaks/Noises | -10% to -25% |
These ranges reflect how different engine issues may affect your cash offer. Offers depend on the model, mileage, and current salvage values in South Africa.
Once we collect your vehicle and complete the paperwork, you'll receive fast payment directly to your account. We handle deregistration and, where applicable, arrange for the car to enter the legal salvage or recycling process according to South African guidelines. Engine-damaged vehicles may provide valuable spares to the local market or go through environmentally responsible disposal.
When selling a non-running or engine-damaged car, always verify buyer legitimacy. Avoid peer-to-peer sales without secure payment or paperwork handling. Sell Your Damaged Car is a trusted national service and can also help you avoid scams - see our "How to Avoid Being Scammed" page for more safety tips.
