Learn how to legally and quickly sell your insurance write-off car in South Africa. Guide to paperwork, free towing, and direct, secure payment for code 2, 3, or 4 vehicles.
An insurance write-off occurs when the cost to repair a damaged vehicle exceeds its market value, or when the car is considered unsafe to return to the road even after repairs. In South Africa, these vehicles are often declared "uneconomical to repair" by insurers and receive a salvage or code assignment. If you own a code 2 (previously repaired), code 3 (rebuilt), or code 4 (permanently unfit for road use) car following an accident, selling it can feel complex due to legal and logistical hurdles.
Trying to sell a write-off car privately presents challenges such as paperwork, limited buyers, and the logistics of moving a non-running vehicle. However, specialist car-buying services like Sell Your Damaged Car are designed to provide transparent, streamlined alternatives for South Africans in this situation.
If your vehicle has been declared a write-off, your options are limited. Attempting repairs may not make economic sense, particularly for code 3 or code 4 cars. It's important to understand the financial implications before deciding:
| Scenario | Estimated Cost to Repair (R) | Estimated Post-Repair Value (R) | Financial Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor Damage (Code 2) | 25,000 | 60,000 | Often worth repairing if safe & economically viable |
| Major Structural (Code 3) | 80,000+ | 50,000-60,000 | Repairs usually not viable; declare write-off |
| Irreparable (Code 4) | N/A | Value only as salvage/parts | Sell for salvage |
As the table shows, once a car is written off, especially for code 3 and code 4, selling it as-is is often the most rational route.
Tip: Always check your insurance settlement for conditions - sometimes written-off vehicles must be deregistered before transfer. Our team can guide you through the process.
Whether your car is a recent insurance write-off or an older code 3 or 4, the process is entirely digital and built for transparency and convenience. Learn more about our approach on our Sell Damaged Cars page.
Selling an insurance write-off car in South Africa requires careful handling of legal and administrative processes. You'll need to:
Our team assists in managing these requirements to make selling painless, even for first-time sellers or businesses liquidating fleet assets.
| Damage Type | Common Offer Impact |
|---|---|
| Code 2 (Minor/repairable) | Higher, if parts and body are in reasonable condition |
| Code 3 (Major damage) | Moderate to low; resale limited due to rebuilt status |
| Code 4 (Irreparable/scrap) | Salvage value only; priced for parts recycling |
Ensure transparency: Upload detailed images of your write-off, keep documentation to hand, and ask for clarity on legal requirements-especially for code 3 and 4 vehicles.
Write-offs with detailed history and transparent records typically receive faster responses and smoother sales. For related advice, see our section on How to Avoid Being Scammed in the salvage market.
Once your insurance write-off is collected, we finalise payment and complete deregistration. The vehicle is then assessed for parts salvage or, if legal, auctioned for non-roadworthy use. You receive confirmation of transfer, ensuring your record is clear. This process protects you from any future liabilities linked to the vehicle.
