Got gearbox trouble or a non-driving car? Learn how to sell for cash, get free towing, and full paperwork assistance in South Africa. Fast, fair, and easy.
Gearbox failure is one of the most expensive car problems in South Africa, sometimes exceeding the resale value of older vehicles. Whether your car is stuck in your driveway or the transmission has failed after an accident, selling becomes the most practical route for many owners.
At Sell Your Damaged Car, we purchase cars with mechanical failures-especially those with gearbox issues or that no longer run. Our service covers Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and all outlying regions, offering:
Gearbox repairs can cost anywhere from R15,000 to over R60,000 depending on the make, model and whether you source a new or used part. For most out-of-warranty vehicles, these costs typically outweigh the car's value after repair. Here's a simple comparison:
| Vehicle Age | Gearbox Repair Cost (Est.) | Market Value After Repair | Value Retained (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8+ Years, 150k+ km | R25,000+ | R40,000-R60,000 | 60-75% |
| 3-7 Years, < 100k km | R30,000-R60,000 | R100,000+ | 75-90% |
If the cost to fix the gearbox approaches or exceeds half the car's post-repair value, selling is usually the better financial decision. This is especially true for vehicles that are also non-running, as additional issues may arise with extended storage.
Selling your car with a faulty gearbox or that's not driving is simple with our streamlined process:
Our nationwide fleet is equipped for vehicles that aren't drivable, so there's no need to arrange transport yourself.
| Damage/Condition | Impact on Offer | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gearbox complete failure | Significant reduction | Value based on spares & completeness |
| Partial gearbox slip | Moderate reduction | Depends on repair viability |
| Non-running (other mechanicals OK) | Similar to above | Transparency maximises your offer |
| Multiple faults (e.g., engine + gearbox) | Further reduction | Offers reflect total repair needs |
Once collection is arranged, we send a branded flatbed or tow vehicle to your address. Collection teams assist with a final inspection, clarify paperwork, and process payment immediately upon successful handover. Proof of deregistration and any required forms are provided via email or printout-keeping your legal responsibilities covered.
Your vehicle enters the salvage or recycling network, contributing to parts supply or safe disposal in accordance with South African regulations.
