Discover what determines the cash offer for accident-damaged cars in South Africa. Learn about damage types, paperwork, repair costs and how to maximise value.
Many South African car owners facing accident damage want to know, "What is my car worth now?" The answer depends on a combination of factors unique to accident vehicles in our market. Whether you're in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, or further afield, understanding how these factors impact offers will help you set expectations and make the right selling decision.
Unlike undamaged cars, accident vehicles are valued based on extent of damage, repair costs, parts demand, and legal compliance - with offers reflecting current market realities for salvage, rebuilding, or stripping.
| Damage Type | Typical Impact on Offer |
|---|---|
| Minor Panel (bumper, dented door) | Low to moderate decrease, often < 15% |
| Major Structural (chassis, frame) | Significant decrease, up to 60% or more |
| Mechanical (engine/gearbox failure) | Moderate to high impact, 30%-70% |
| Flood/Fire Damage | High impact, can render vehicle suitable for spares only |
| Written-Off (insurance category) | Typically valued for salvage parts, 10%-35% of market value |
Offers are calculated on an individual basis, but the table above gives a guideline based on South African reselling and salvage market realities.
A major factor is whether the cost to repair your damaged vehicle is less than, equal to, or more than its value after the accident. In many cases, repairing a heavily damaged car is not financially viable, and buyers calculate offers by estimating likely repair costs and residual value.
| Repair Cost (Rands) | Percent of Pre-Accident Value | Typical Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| R10,000 - R30,000 | 10 - 30% | Repair may be justifiable |
| R40,000+ | 40% or more | Selling is typically more cost-effective |
| Above insured market value | 70%+ | Selling for salvage/parts advised |
