Step-by-step guide to selling a code 3 (rebuilt) car privately in South Africa. Learn about disclosures, required paperwork, price factors, and tips to avoid scams.
In South Africa, a code 3 vehicle refers to a car that was previously written off due to damage, theft, or severe incident, but has been repaired and re-registered as "rebuilt". These vehicles typically carry a reduced resale value due to their accident or recovery history, but can be sold privately. However, the process requires transparency, attention to legal detail, and an honest approach to documentation to protect both buyer and seller.
Before selling a code 3 car, consider whether repairs will add value or simply increase your costs. Many buyers are cautious with code 3 cars due to lingering reliability and insurance concerns, so careful disclosure and realistic pricing are vital.
| Repair Cost (Estimate, R) | Average Value Increase (R) | Likely Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| R10,000 - R30,000 | R5,000 - R15,000 | Small gain/loss due to code 3 status |
| R0 (sell as-is) | Minimal (condition dependent) | Faster sale, lower value |
| Damage/History Type | Typical Impact (%) | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Light accident, well repaired | -20 to -30% | Detailed invoices help retain value |
| Structural or chassis damage | -35 to -50% | Buyers are cautious-supply proof of professional repairs |
| Stolen/recovered | -20 to -40% | Check for police clearance on all major assemblies |
Selling a code 3 car privately involves several legal steps:
Once payment is received, complete the Notification of Change of Ownership (Form NCO) immediately to avoid future fines or legal action tied to the car. Remove your e-tag and clear any toll or traffic penalties. It's recommended to take a record of the handover (preferably with photos and signed documents).
If selling to a private party in another province (e.g. from Johannesburg to Cape Town), coordinate collection, document signing and payment via traceable means-never release the car until funds clear. Consider a low-risk alternative for code 3 and salvage vehicles, such as a specialist service like Sell Your Damaged Car, for instant offers and paperwork support if private selling proves too complex.
