Learn how to identify trustworthy scrap car buyers in South Africa, avoid scams, and ensure a safe, legal sale with free collection and prompt payment.
Selling your scrap car in South Africa can turn an unwanted liability into cash, but choosing the wrong buyer may lead to headaches, undervalued offers or even legal issues. The South African automotive salvage market is competitive, but it's important to separate trustworthy buyers from risky or unlicensed operators.
This guide explains how to evaluate potential scrap car buyers, what to look for in a professional service, and which South Africa-specific regulations protect sellers. Whether your vehicle has been in an accident, is non-running, written-off, or simply too costly to repair, finding a reputable buyer ensures you get a fair offer and that the process stays safe and transparent.
The decision to scrap your car versus repair often depends on repair costs, parts availability, and the resale value of the vehicle after repair. Here's a simple comparison to help you decide:
| Scenario | Estimated Repair Cost | Value After Repair | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic | R3,000-R8,000 | High | Consider repairing |
| Engine/gearbox failure | R15,000-R50,000+ | Low | Scrap or sell as is |
| Written-off accident | Often exceeds value | Very Low | Scrap/salvage |
Not all scrap or salvage car buyers offer the same level of professionalism and financial safety. Here are some signs of a reputable buyer in South Africa:
Avoid buyers who pressure you for your logbook before payment, insist on cash deals with no documentation, or can't provide proof of FSP registration (if applicable).
When selling a scrap car, it's crucial to comply with South Africa's vehicle deregistration process through the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). A trustworthy buyer will help you with:
If the car is under finance, consult your lender-some reliable buyers can settle accounts on your behalf and guide you through the process.
| Damage Type | Usual Impact on Offer |
|---|---|
| Minor mechanical fault | Low to medium reduction |
| Severe accident/written-off | Major reduction (salvage value only) |
| Flood/fire damage | Major reduction |
| Complete non-runner | Medium reduction |
A trustworthy South African scrap car buyer will confirm completion of paperwork and payment immediately after collection. You should expect receipts for every step and, if requested, confirmation that the vehicle has been removed from your name in NaTIS records. Typically, vehicles are then processed through regulated dismantling or recycling centres for parts or metal recovery.
