Discover typical timelines to transfer or deregister ownership of a damaged car in South Africa, with key paperwork steps and expert advice for sellers.
When selling a damaged, accident-written-off or non-running vehicle in South Africa, transferring ownership (or deregistering it if written-off) is a legal requirement. The timeline depends on how the sale is structured, your paperwork, vehicle status, and whether you use a specialist buyer like Sell Your Damaged Car. Private buyers and licensed salvage services each follow regulated procedures prescribed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and eNatis.
For written-off and salvage vehicles, deregistration is critical. Failure to properly transfer or deregister can result in fines or liability if the vehicle is misused.
| Transfer Method | Average Completion (Business Days) | Key Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Direct at licensing office | 1-3 | NCO, MVR1A, ID copies, Proof of residence |
| Through reputable buyer | 1-2 | Handled by buyer; seller provides necessary documents |
| Deregistration - written-off/salvage | 1-5 | NaTIS forms, salvage letter, buyer receipt |
In most cases, ownership transfer or deregistration takes 1 to 5 business days once all documents are submitted. Using a trusted salvage buyer streamlines the process significantly, especially if your vehicle is non-running or accident-damaged.
Ownership transfers and deregistrations are tightly regulated by the RTMC and local licensing authorities. Sellers are advised to maintain proof of sale and deregistration certificates to avoid liability if a damaged vehicle is illegally used after sale. Deregistered vehicles cannot legally return to public roads unless fully rebuilt and recertified. Experienced buyers will guide you through every step and provide documentation for peace of mind.
