Find out which NaTIS forms you need for transferring ownership or deregistering a damaged or written-off car in South Africa. Step-by-step legal & paperwork guide.
Transferring ownership of a damaged, non-running or accident-written-off vehicle in South Africa requires careful documentation to stay compliant and avoid liability. At the heart of this process are the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) forms managed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). Whether you're selling to a dealer, salvage buyer, or privately, correctly completing the required NaTIS paperwork protects both parties and ensures the vehicle is deregistered or re-registered as required by law.
For damaged or written-off vehicles, the process differs slightly from standard car sales. Here are scenarios and the forms you'll need:
| Sale Scenario | Forms Needed | SA-Legal Note |
|---|---|---|
| Selling to a salvage buyer (vehicle beyond repair) | NCO, NVD, RC1 | Must deregister as unfit; buyer receives notification |
| Selling a repairable but accident-damaged car | NCO, RC1 (hand to buyer), RLV (buyer completes) | Sale can proceed if all forms properly submitted |
| Deregistering a written-off car (not selling) | NVD, RC1 | You keep copy for records and to clear liability |
If your vehicle has been declared permanently unfit for use (e.g., after a total-loss accident), it must be deregistered at your local licensing office. This removes the vehicle from the eNaTIS system, prevents further licensing fees, and protects you from future legal claims tied to the vehicle.
If you sell to a company like Sell Your Damaged Car, we handle the deregistration and NaTIS compliance for you, ensuring the process is both legal and effortless nationwide, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond.
Matthew from Randburg had a hatchback written-off after hailstorm damage. By submitting his NCO and NVD forms, with our support, his ownership was fully transferred, his liability closed, and he avoided future licensing costs. Buyers across Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban experience similar smooth processes when paperwork is promptly completed.
| Form | Use Case | Where to Submit |
|---|---|---|
| NCO | All ownership transfers (damaged and running vehicles) | Any registering authority (licensing office) |
| RC1 | Proof of ownership / registration | Retained by owner; handed to buyer on sale |
| NVD | Deregistering scrapped or written-off vehicles | Any licensing authority |
| RLV | Buyer re-registers vehicle after purchase/repair | Buyer submits at registration |
