Find out how quickly you can sell your damaged or non-running car in South Africa, what affects the process, and how to get paid without delays.
If your car has been damaged in an accident, suffered severe mechanical problems, or has been written off, selling it can seem overwhelming. Many South Africans worry about how long this process will take-especially when factoring in paperwork, towing, and payment delays. This guide will clarify the realistic timeline for selling a damaged vehicle and outline how you can speed up the process while avoiding common pitfalls.
| Sale Method | Average Time to Sell | Key Delays |
|---|---|---|
| Private Sale (Classifieds) | 2-6 weeks | Finding a buyer, negotiation, no-shows, admin |
| Auction | 1-3 weeks | Auction dates, payment release |
| Specialist Buyer (e.g., Sell Your Damaged Car) | 1-3 days | Offer acceptance, collection arrangements |
Timelines can vary based on factors like your location, seasonality, paperwork readiness, and whether the car is under finance or deregistration is required. However, with a reputable service, the process is streamlined to avoid long waits.
Fill out the online form with as much detail as possible-make, model, year, type of damage, and clear photographs. Specialist buyers respond within hours, often with a same-day cash offer.
Read through the offer and conditions. If accepted promptly, paperwork is prepared immediately to speed up collection and payment.
Leading services (like Sell Your Damaged Car) assist with all admin: transfer of ownership, deregistration, and finance settlement if needed. This removes major bottlenecks for South African sellers, particularly when dealing with accident-damaged or written-off cars.
Professional buyers offer free, scheduled towing-usually within 1 working day of offer acceptance, regardless of location. There's no cost or risk to the seller.
Immediate or same-day payment is the norm once the vehicle and paperwork are collected. Reputable services pay via EFT with confirmed funds before leaving the premises.
| Situation | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|
| Fully paid, paperwork ready | 1-2 working days |
| Vehicle under finance | 2-4 working days (after settlement letter) |
| Remote/rural collection | Add 1 day, but usually within 3 days |
| Private classified sale | 2-6 weeks or longer |
Once your damaged vehicle is collected and paid for, the buyer handles deregistration and, if applicable, finance settlement. The car may be stripped for spares, rebuilt according to salvage laws, or responsibly scrapped. Sellers should receive written confirmation of sale and deregistration for peace of mind.
