Protect yourself from fraud with this South African car scam avoidance checklist. Learn proven safety steps for secure car selling, buying, and paperwork.
South Africa's used car market is booming, but so are scams targeting sellers and buyers. From fake payments and bogus escrow services to identity theft and hijackings, vehicle owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other regions face a host of risks. Whether you're selling a damaged car, trading in a non-runner, or simply upgrading, following a comprehensive anti-scam checklist is crucial for peace of mind and financial safety.
| Step | Action Required | South African Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Verify the Buyer | Request ID and proof of residence; cross-check phone numbers and email addresses | Prefer face-to-face meetings in secure public places |
| 2. Payment Transparency | Insist on cleared funds in your bank account before releasing vehicle or papers | Banks in SA can take 24-48 hours to clear, regardless of SMS notifications |
| 3. No Upfront Fees | Never pay to "release" funds or for bogus admin/clearance charges | Legitimate buyers pay you, not the reverse |
| 4. Meet Only in Safe Locations | Choose police stations, busy petrol stations, or public places for handovers | Arrange viewings during daylight hours with someone present |
| 5. Control Paperwork Exchange | Don't share original logbook (NaTIS) or registration until funds clear | Use the official yellow Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO) form |
| 6. Be Cautious with Test Drives | Retain keys, permit only accompanied drives, and check insurance | Arrange short test drives in safe, familiar areas |
| 7. Use Trusted Car-Buying Services | Research company reviews and check national coverage and admin policies | A reputable service should offer free towing, verified payments, and comprehensive paperwork handling (see Sell Damaged Cars and How to Avoid Being Scammed pages) |
