Learn how to check a car's accident, finance, and service history before selling in South Africa. Follow our step-by-step guide for a safe, transparent resale process.
When selling your car-especially if it has accident damage or has been written off-confirming its full history is crucial. Trustworthy documentation not only helps you price your vehicle accurately, but also builds buyer confidence and prevents disputes. In South Africa, this transparency is becoming ever more important due to tighter regulations and a more informed secondhand market.
Start by collecting your vehicle's original NaTIS registration certificate, service book, accident repair invoices (if any), previous sale agreements, and up-to-date license disc. Having these ready streamlines the entire process and shows prospective buyers or companies-like those purchasing damaged vehicles for cash-that your car's past is well-documented.
South African car owners can use online platforms such as TransUnion's Auto Information Solutions or VehicleCheck.co.za to access reports based on the car's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). These typically reveal:
Contact your car's franchise dealer and ask them to cross-check your maintenance records using your VIN or registration. If serviced at independent workshops, request formal invoices or a printout of the car's maintenance log.
If your vehicle needs a roadworthy certificate for private sale, arrange an inspection at an authorized testing centre and retain the clearance documents. For salvage or written-off cars, deregistration may be required before resale to a salvage buyer.
| Check Type | Information Provided |
|---|---|
| VIN-Based Online Report | Accident/write-off status, theft records, outstanding finance, odometer readings |
| Service Book/Invoices | Maintenance intervals, repairs, known faults or recalls |
| Roadworthy Inspection | Legal compliance, safety, police clearance |
| NaTIS/Registration | Ownership proof, date of last change, deregistration status |
If your car has accident damage or has been written off, be upfront about its condition and provide all supporting documentation. Buyers-and South African law-require transparency, especially for cars being deregistered and sold as non-runners or for salvage. Ensure the car's record doesn't show disputes or police flags, as these complicate the resale process.
Once you've gathered, checked, and confirmed all details, you can approach reputable buyers or list the vehicle for private sale with confidence. If selling to a service like Sell Your Damaged Car, simply upload your documents and car photos online-this enables a fast, transparent offer process with free towing, admin assistance, and smooth payment.
