Learn how to sell your written-off car legally in Pretoria: step-by-step paperwork, deregistration, local requirements, and how specialist buyers simplify the process.
A car is considered "written off" in South Africa when the insurer determines it's irreparable, unsafe, or uneconomical to restore after an accident or other damage. If you're a Pretoria vehicle owner with a written-off car, understanding the local laws around selling and transferring ownership is crucial to avoid liability or legal trouble. This guide breaks down the essentials for selling your written-off car in Pretoria legally, including steps for deregistration, handling paperwork, and tips for minimising hassle.
Yes, but the sale must comply with the regulations set out by the National Road Traffic Act and managed by licensing authorities in Gauteng. Written-off cars can only be legally sold as salvage, for parts, or to specialist buyers - not for road use unless properly rebuilt and cleared.
Before selling, weigh up whether repair is financially or legally practical. For most written-off vehicles, repairs exceed the value kept, and roadworthiness clearance is costly and uncertain.
| Scenario | Repair Cost Estimate (R) | Resale Value After Repair (R) | Practical Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Severe Crash Damage (Written Off) | 50,000 - 120,000 | 40,000 - 90,000 (after re-classification) | Often a net loss and legal/insurance challenge |
| Major Engine Fire | 30,000 - 80,000 | 30,000 - 70,000 | Costly, specialist rebuilds needed |
| Flood Damage (Written Off) | 60,000+ | Varies, typically <50% book value | Most owners sell as salvage |
For Pretoria owners, selling a written-off car to a salvage specialist is typically the only safe and cost-effective choice, especially when repair costs and paperwork hurdles are taken into account.
| Damage Type | Typical Pretoria Offer Impact | Admin Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Severe crash (code 3) | Lower offer, specialist buyers only | High |
| Fire or flood (code 3) | Usually as salvage, price reflects parts value | Medium-High |
| Mechanical failure (code 2 or 3) | Slightly higher if some parts usable | Medium |
Once your written-off car is collected in Pretoria, a specialist buyer will:
