Step-by-step guide to paperwork, deregistration, and legal compliance for selling a salvaged or written-off vehicle in Pretoria. Includes licensing, finance, and SA-specific forms.
Selling a salvaged car in Pretoria involves specific legal and administrative requirements to ensure both the seller and buyer are protected. A 'salvaged car' is typically a vehicle written off by insurance, severely damaged by accident, flood, or fire, or is non-running and no longer considered roadworthy. Whether you're a private owner, part of a small fleet, or acting on behalf of a business, the South African regulatory environment requires several official documents and due diligence steps before a transfer of ownership can occur.
| Status | Mandatory Paperwork | SA Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accident-Written Off | NaTIS Certificate, NCO Form, Affidavit | Insurance assessment letter recommended |
| Flood/Fire Damage | NaTIS Certificate, NCO Form | Fire report may be requested in some cases |
| Stolen & Recovered | Police Clearance, NaTIS, NCO Form | Must update SAPS records and clear status |
| Finance Settled | Settlement Letter, NaTIS, NCO | Transfer after finance closure only |
It's crucial to maintain copies of all submitted forms and request official stamps or receipts at each process step for protection in legal disputes or future vehicle claims.
Selling to a specialist buyer like Sell Your Damaged Car means expert assistance with every stage of the paperwork. Their team coordinates all admin, from form-filling to licensing centre visits, and ensures legal compliance specific to Gauteng and Pretoria area procedures. All collections come with full paperwork guidance, and sellers receive clear instructions on what to prepare.
If your car is classified as Code 3 (permanently unfit for road use), South African law requires full deregistration before final sale. After deregistration, a salvage certificate is issued; make sure to keep a copy as proof in all future dealings. This not only limits your liability, but ensures new owners are aware of the vehicle's non-roadworthy status. The Sell Your Damaged Car team can initiate, track, and confirm deregistration as part of the collection process.
Lindiwe in Pretoria North had an accident-damaged, non-running vehicle with finance still outstanding. After settling with her bank, she contacted Sell Your Damaged Car, who provided her with a clear step-by-step checklist. Their team coordinated document pick-up, completed the NCO, arranged free towing, lodged deregistration at Waltloo Licensing Centre, and issued payment with official proof of transfer, securing both her legal compliance and peace of mind.
Once the sale and paperwork are completed, be sure to:
