Discover how to sell your non-runner for scrap in South Africa. Learn when to scrap vs repair, legal paperwork, and how our process gets you paid fast.
A non-runner-whether it's stopped due to a mechanical issue, electrical failure, old age or an accident-can be difficult to sell privately. Many South African vehicle owners struggle with costs, the hassle of arranging viewings, and uncertain legal requirements. Scrapping your non-running car through a professional service offers a safer, faster route. By working with Sell Your Damaged Car, you benefit from a transparent process, competitive cash offers, nationwide collection, and all admin taken care of, so you can move on without stress.
Making the call to scrap or repair depends mainly on repair costs, vehicle age, and expected resale value. Here's a comparative look for South African owners:
| Vehicle Condition | Repair Cost Estimate (R) | Typical Value After Repair (R) | Is Scrapping Advisable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Severe engine failure | 20,000-70,000 | 30,000-60,000 | Often yes |
| Accident written-off | Varies (usually not feasible) | 40% of pre-accident value | Yes |
| Flood or fire damage | 15,000-100,000+ | 30-60% of prior value | Usually yes |
| Old/obselete model | >50% of car value | Low | Yes |
If your non-runner fits these scenarios, scrapping through a trusted buyer is often the most practical course, especially in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas where free towing and deregistration assistance make the process seamless.
With Sell Your Damaged Car, the journey from "deadweight" to cash in hand is simple:
This approach means minimal paperwork required from your side, with instant help for unique situations (like financed vehicles or missing documents).
In South Africa, selling a non-runner for scrap involves several legal and administrative tasks. These ensure both compliance and your peace of mind. Sellers must:
| Damage Type | Effect on Offer | SA-Specific Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Major mechanical failure | Medium to high reduction | Engine/gearbox failures common with older vehicles |
| Severe accident damage | High reduction, possible write-off | Salvage title needed for insurance claims |
| Flood/fire damage | Substantial reduction | Rust/corrosion and electronics usually irreparable |
| Long-term non-use | Moderate reduction | Parts can be valuable if undamaged by storage |
After your non-runner is collected, you receive payment within hours (dependent on your banking provider). The car is securely transported and evaluated for dismantling, parts resale, or recycling-always in accordance with legal and environmental requirements. You receive confirmation of deregistration for full peace of mind.
