Need to sell a car with gearbox or transmission failure? Get a competitive cash offer, free towing, and all paperwork handled across South Africa.
Selling a car with gearbox issues or total transmission failure can feel impossible. Private buyers often avoid these cars, and repairs are pricey. That's where we help - Sell Your Damaged Car purchases vehicles with mechanical failures throughout South Africa. We provide competitive cash offers, free nationwide collection, and handle all required paperwork.
Transmission failure is one of the most expensive repairs vehicle owners face. Whether your car is stuck in one gear, refuses to move, or makes alarming grinding noises, the cost of restoring a failed gearbox can easily run from R10,000 to R70,000 or more, depending on make and model.
In South Africa, even relatively new vehicles can be written off by insurers due to high transmission repair costs outstripping market value. Instead of spending large amounts or enduring months trying to find a specialist buyer, selling to a dedicated damaged-car service can save money, time, and stress.
| Repair Scenario | Estimated Cost (R) | Average Value Retained (%) | Typical Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor repairs | 5,000 - 20,000 | 70-85 | Sometimes worthwhile |
| Full replacement (older car) | 30,000+ | 45-65 | Car often written off |
| Sell as-is | 0 | Resale value only | Fast, low-stress sale |
We buy cars, bakkies, SUVs and vans with all kinds of transmission faults:
Sellers from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, and all surrounding areas benefit from our fast-response collection teams and transparent process.
Tip: Have your registration documents, ID and bank details ready for the smoothest transaction. For vehicles under finance, notify your financial institution to authorise settlement.
Selling a car with transmission failure in South Africa is legal, provided you disclose all known issues. Our team will:
This protects both buyers and sellers from future liability, unpaid fines, or fraudulent resales.
| Gearbox Issue | Usual Offer Impact (%) |
|---|---|
| Minor shift lag (manual) | 10-15 lower |
| Full automatic failure | 30-50 lower |
| Complete non-runner | 50+ lower |
Once we collect your vehicle, you'll receive immediate confirmation of payment. We then process the deregistration and take responsibility for the car's next journey, whether that's recycling, rebuild, or legal salvage. There's nothing more for you to do.
A Cape Town-based fleet owner faced four bakkies with gearbox faults after years of service. Instead of undertaking high repair costs for old models, they used our service to remove all vehicles in a single week, with paperwork swiftly managed and cash flow restored to their business.
