Explore how scrap yards in South Africa price written-off and accident damaged cars, see current value ranges, and learn about your selling options.
When your car is declared a write-off after an accident or severe damage, selling it to a scrap yard is a common route for South African owners. Scrap yards and salvage buyers assess these vehicles for parting out, recycling, or potential resale as salvage. This guide breaks down how pricing works, which factors matter most, and how services like Sell Your Damaged Car compare to traditional scrapyards.
Scrap yards usually offer prices based on the weight of reusable metals and, in some cases, the potential value of working components. For written-off cars, especially late models or those with salvageable parts, the offer may be higher than pure scrap value. However, pricing is still typically well below book value.
| Vehicle Type | Scrap Value (R) | With Salvageable Parts (R) |
|---|---|---|
| Small Hatchback | R5,000 - R8,000 | R8,000 - R15,000 |
| Sedan | R7,000 - R12,000 | R10,000 - R20,000 |
| SUV/Bakkie | R10,000 - R18,000 | R15,000 - R30,000 |
Figures are approximate and depend on market demand for metals and parts. (Estimates as of 2024.)
Written-off cars that have valuable undamaged components often yield significantly higher prices than those that are stripped, burnt out, or badly rusted. Scrap yards will also deduct from their offer if towing or removal is needed.
| Damage Type | Effect on Price |
|---|---|
| Minor Accident (Panels, Lights) | +10-30% above scrap value (parts usable) |
| Engine Failure/Non-Runner | Basic scrap or parts value |
| Severe Collision (Structural) | Scrap value only (minimal parts salvage) |
| Burnt Out/Flooded | Low scrap value (metals only) |
It's important to weigh up your options. While scrap yards often offer cash on the spot for written-off vehicles, the process can be less transparent, and you'll likely need to handle towing and paperwork yourself. Specialist services like Sell Your Damaged Car provide online quotes, free nationwide towing, paperwork (including deregistration), and fast payment directly to your account.
When selling to a traditional scrap yard, they may immediately strip, crush, or recycle the vehicle. With specialist buyers, after deregistration and payment, vehicles are assessed for parts removal, salvage resale or responsible disposal in accordance with South African law.
