Discover the real facts about selling cars with deployed airbags in South Africa. We debunk myths, explain resale rules, and offer expert guidance for owners.
In South Africa, many vehicle owners are uncertain about what happens after their car's airbags have deployed-especially when it comes to resale value or selling their damaged vehicle. From accident-written-off hatchbacks in Cape Town to company sedans in Johannesburg with front-end collisions, airbag deployment often prompts a range of misconceptions. Here, we tackle the most common myths and explain your options if you want to sell your airbag-deployed car for cash.
Deployed airbags are a sign of significant impact and often trigger write-off status or major repairs. The question is: how much does this affect resale value? Here's a breakdown for typical South African cases:
| Damage Scenario | Average Repair Cost (Estimate) | Offer Impact (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Single Airbag (driver only) | R8,000 - R15,000 | 15% - 30% lower |
| Multiple Airbags | R18,000 - R40,000+ | 30% - 50% lower |
| Airbag + Structural Damage | R35,000 - R100,000+ | Significant reduction (individual quote needed) |
These figures are estimates-actual offers for airbag-deployed vehicles in Johannesburg, Durban, or Cape Town will depend on the make, model, total condition, and whether critical structural features are affected.
In South Africa, selling a car with airbag deployment is fully legal-if you disclose its status and handle paperwork correctly. Here's what you need to know:
Once your airbag-deployed vehicle is collected, the buyer will typically:
Always ensure you receive confirmation of deregistration; this protects you from future liability or e-toll issues.
