Are new tyres or a fresh battery worth the cost when selling a non-runner car in South Africa? Find out if these upgrades increase your cash offer.
If your car won't start or move under its own power, you're likely facing a decision: sell it as a non-runner, or spend money fixing smaller issues-like the battery or tyres-before listing it. In South Africa, where the salvage market is competitive and buyers like Sell Your Damaged Car offer instant online quotes, is it actually worthwhile replacing tyres or the battery first?
First, weigh repair costs against retained value. Here is a simplified estimate for common scenarios in South Africa:
| Replacement | Typical Cost (R) | Likely Offer Increase (R) | Net Gain/Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Battery | 1200-2500 | 500-1500 | Usually Loss |
| 4 New Tyres | 3500-7000 | 1000-3000 | Usually Loss |
| Both (Battery + Tyres) | 4700-9500 | 1500-4000 | Usually Loss |
These figures reflect average retail replacement costs and typical offer adjustments from car-buying services and salvage buyers in South Africa (as of 2024). For most non-runners, the increase in straight sale value rarely matches your outlay on new parts.
Vehicle-buying services that specialise in non-runners, such as Sell Your Damaged Car, assess the full condition, including:
While clearly unsafe or threadbare tyres, or a totally missing battery, may reduce a quote slightly (typically for logistics or testing purposes), a car that is otherwise a non-runner due to major mechanical failure, accident damage or insurance write-off status will not see a major bump in its offer just from new consumables.
If your car is under finance or subject to an insurance claim, inform the buyer. Deregistration and remaining finance settlements are part of the admin services offered by reputable South African buyers.
| Damage/Condition | Impact on Quote |
|---|---|
| Dead Battery Only | Minimal (R0-R500) |
| One Flat/Old Tyre | Minimal (R0-R750) |
| Multiple Bald/Flat Tyres | Low (R0-R1500) |
| Engine/Transmission Failure | High (R5,000+ deduction) |
| Accident/Structural Damage | High (R10,000+ deduction) |
New tyres or a battery may make your non-runner easier to move, but rarely justifies the spend versus selling as-is-especially when free towing is included by most professional buyers.
When you've accepted a cash offer from a specialist non-runner buyer:
Professional buyers (like Sell Your Damaged Car) purchase non-runners for parts, recycling, or salvage resale, and adjust their offer based on the total salvageable value, not just the consumables replaced.
For almost all non-running, damaged, or written-off vehicles in South Africa, the smart move is to sell as-is and leverage services offering free collection and admin assistance. Replacing tyres or the battery immediately before sale rarely returns your investment.
