Comprehensive step-by-step guide to renewing expired car license discs and deregistering scrap vehicles in Gauteng. Practical tips, costs, and legal advice for safe, stress-free scrapping.
In Gauteng, vehicle owners often face the dilemma of dealing with expired license discs on cars that are no longer roadworthy-whether due to extensive damage, accident write-off, or mechanical failure. While it may seem unnecessary to renew the disc if the vehicle isn't going back on the road, an unrenewed license can lead to unexpected penalties and complications during deregistration or sale as scrap. This guide walks you through the renewal and deregistration process for scrap or written-off vehicles, ensuring compliance with Gauteng licensing authorities and a hassle-free experience.
Even if your car is unfit for the road, keeping its licensing status up to date is important:
| Time Since Expiry | Penalty Fee (Est., per month) | Example: Hatchback (Annual License) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Month | R140-R250 | ~R468 + penalty |
| 6 Months | R840-R1,400 | ~R468 + ~R1,200 penalty |
| 12+ Months | Up to full annual fee in penalties | May exceed R2,000 total (incl. fees & penalties) |
Note: Figures are estimates and may vary by vehicle class and municipality. Always confirm latest fees at your local licensing centre.
Once your license disc is up to date and all outstanding fees are settled, you can proceed with deregistering the car as scrap or permanently unfit for use. This is essential when selling to a scrap dealer or buyer like Sell Your Damaged Car.
If your car is under finance, obtain a settlement letter and permission from your bank or finance house before proceeding with deregistration. Outstanding finance or a legal title dispute will prevent legal transfer or scrapping.
Your vehicle is now officially removed from the eNaTIS system and no further license renewal fees or penalties will accrue. You are no longer legally liable for the vehicle. Dealers or salvage buyers may request a copy of the deregistration letter before collecting your scrap car. Always confirm pickup and payment protocols to avoid scams-reputable buyers will sign paperwork on the spot and offer verifiable payment.
