Learn how non-runner status impacts your car's value in South Africa, what buyers consider, legal steps, and how to fetch a fair cash offer.
A "non-runner" car is one that cannot move under its own power, typically due to engine failure, electrical faults, severe damage, or other mechanical issues. In South Africa, this status can significantly change what your vehicle is worth - whether following an accident, a major breakdown, or after long-term neglect.
Many owners are caught off guard by how much value their car can lose after becoming a non-runner. Let's examine why, how that devaluation is calculated, and what it means for selling your non-running vehicle.
The non-runner label usually signals to both private buyers and professional services that a car is not roadworthy without repairs, which means:
As a result, fair market value (the price it could achieve in a working state) is reduced substantially - often more than the value of the actual repair, because of market uncertainty and reduced buyer interest.
| Vehicle Condition | Estimated Value Retained (%) |
|---|---|
| Fully running, minor cosmetic faults | 80% - 90% |
| Running, but mechanical/electrical warnings | 60% - 75% |
| Non-runner (engine or transmission issues) | 30% - 55% |
| Non-runner (extensive damage, parts only) | 10% - 25% |
These figures are indicative ranges based on South African vehicle market observations. Final value depends on make/model, age, severity of the failure, and current demand in the salvage or spares market.
Note: In South Africa, non-running status dramatically limits your options for private sales as standard buyers typically seek vehicles that can at least be test-driven and towed with ease.
| Cause of Non-Runner | Typical Offer Adjustments | SA Market Note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine Seized / Major Mechanical Failure | -50% or more | Most offers based on part-out or export use |
| Severe Accident Damage (non-moveable) | -60% to -80% | Written-off vehicles usually bought for salvage only |
| Electrical Failure (immobilised) | -40% to -70% | Some brands/models easier to resell for spares |
| Long-term Storage / Neglect (can't start) | -50% or more | Deterioration adds to devaluation |
Selling a non-runner is different from a typical private sale. In South Africa, additional paperwork is often required so that the buyer can legally take ownership, deregister the vehicle from the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS), and arrange for towing or salvage transport.
While private sales flounder for non-runners, specialist dealers offer attractive benefits:
Presenting a thorough case, even for a non-runner, reduces uncertainty and may improve your valuation.
Consideration: Non-runner status is a major value hit, but time is also a factor. Leaving a car parked for months usually decreases its value even further - so acting promptly can make a difference.
Non-runner status reduces car value considerably in South Africa, reflecting both repair costs and market demand realities. By understanding the process and using a transparent, specialist service, you can unlock fair value and ensure your responsibilities as an owner are closed off properly.
