Explore your options for a written-off car in Johannesburg. Learn when to repair, when to sell for cash, and the paperwork involved. Expert, SA-specific guidance.
A written-off car, also known as an insurance total loss, can be a difficult situation for any Johannesburg vehicle owner. After an accident or serious damage, you're faced with a crucial decision: Should you repair your vehicle, or is it time to sell your written-off car as is? Understanding your options, the legalities, and the market can help you make the right choice while saving time and avoiding unnecessary hassles.
In South African insurance and roadworthiness terms, a car is 'written off' when the cost to repair exceeds a set percentage of its pre-accident market value (typically 60-75%). It's then deregistered, or reclassified as salvage, and cannot legally be used on the road unless fully repaired and re-certified by the authorities.
You generally have two paths:
| Scenario | Estimated Repair Cost (R) | % of Pre-Accident Value | Vehicle Value After Repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor Structural | R25,000 - R45,000 | 45% - 60% | Reduced, with Code 3/4 mark |
| Major Structural | R60,000+ | 75%+ | Significant loss, hard to sell |
| Severe (Write-off) | Over market value | 100%+ | Usually not roadworthy |
Repairing a written-off car is only recommended if the underlying structure is safe and quality parts are available. Most Johannesburg owners opt to sell due to high panel beating and compliance costs, and because the car's value drops dramatically after a write-off, especially when re-registered as Code 3 or 4.
Selling your written-off or salvage vehicle is straightforward with a specialist service. Here's how it typically works for Johannesburg clients:
This process removes the worry of finding a qualified buyer, arranging transport, or dealing with legal transfer. For details, refer to our Sell Damaged Cars page or our Sell Non-Running Car guide.
| Damage Type | Typical Offer Impact | Popular Outcomes in JHB |
|---|---|---|
| Panel & Cosmetic | Lower impact | Salvage resale or minor repair |
| Structural/Chassis | Significant reduction | Parts-only buyer |
| Mechanical (engine/gearbox) | Moderate to high | Recyclers or specialists |
Specialist buyers, like those offered across Johannesburg, will process the car for either parts salvage or recycling. All paperwork is finalised, and you receive instant payment. For your safety, always request proof of deregistration and retain a copy of the transaction. If selling a fleet or multiple vehicles, batch negotiations are available.
