Discover who purchases accident-damaged cars in South Africa, how offers are formed, legal steps, and practical tips to sell fast with paperwork and towing handled.
Who typically buys them
Salvage yards, panel-beaters, insurers and specialist cash buyers purchase accident-damaged cars.
Know your paperwork
Clear sale agreements, deregistration and finance settlement speed a lawful transfer.
Maximise the offer
Provide honest details, service history and clear photos to improve offers.
If you’re asking who buys accident damaged cars in SA, there are several common buyers: specialist salvage and wreck dealers, panel-beaters and repair shops that trade parts, insurance salvage buyers, and direct cash buyers who purchase vehicles in any condition. The right buyer depends on your priorities-speed, paperwork help, towing, or maximising value. This guide explains typical buyer types, how offers are calculated in South Africa, and what to expect from the selling process.
Specialist buyers understand salvage values, towing logistics, and SA paperwork (including deregistration and settlement with finance houses). They often offer free collection and handle transfer documents, which reduces the administrative burden for private owners and small fleet managers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding regions.
Note: If your vehicle is under finance, most buyers will require settlement or a written release from the finance provider before ownership can transfer. Check your finance statement and speak with your lender early to avoid delays.
Deciding whether to sell an accident-damaged car or repair it depends on repair estimates, the car’s market value before the accident, and the time and hassle involved. For many owners of older or heavily damaged cars, selling to a specialist buyer is faster and less risky than arranging repair and resale.
| Typical repair cost (estimate) | Vehicle pre-accident value (R) | Estimated value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor repairs (R5k-R20k) | R50,000 | ~R40k-R48k (subject to buyer perception) |
| Moderate repairs (R20k-R60k) | R120,000 | ~R80k-R110k (market dependent) |
| Major structural / engine (R60k+) | R150,000 | Often significantly less than pre-accident value; selling may be preferable |
Figures above are illustrative and reflect typical South African market behaviour; actual estimates vary by make, model, age and region. For many owners in the major metros, a competitive cash offer from a specialist buyer avoids the uncertainty and delays of repairs and resale.
Learn more about our process and what we buy at the About / How it works page and see options for non-running vehicles on the Sell Non-Running Car page.
Most specialist buyers follow a simple flow: submit vehicle details and photos, receive an initial offer based on condition and market demand, accept an offer, and arrange collection with paperwork and payment. In South Africa, reputable buyers will arrange free towing, assist with deregistration or transfer, and coordinate settlement if a vehicle is financed.
When selling an accident-damaged car in SA, proper documentation protects both seller and buyer. Important items include the vehicle registration certificate (if available), ID of the seller, a written sale agreement, and any finance settlement paperwork. If the car is written off by an insurer, check the insurer’s instructions about salvage transfer.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic damage (panels, paint) | Lower impact if mechanicals are sound; parts value helps offers. |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; often priced for parts or scrap. |
| Engine / transmission failure | Large impact; salvage buyers value usable drivetrain parts if present. |
| Flood or fire damage | High negative impact due to corrosion/hidden faults; priced accordingly. |
For more detail on selling damaged vehicles, including which conditions we accept, see our Sell Damaged Cars page. To return to the main service overview, visit our homepage.
After collection the buyer will complete transfer paperwork, process payment and, depending on the buyer, either repair, dismantle for parts or sell the vehicle to a secondary market. Expect a written receipt and confirmation that the vehicle has been collected. If you have unresolved finance, ensure the buyer confirms settlement procedures and obtain proof of settlement.
A private owner in Cape Town with a five-year-old hatchback that suffered moderate front-end damage might get multiple approaches: a panel beater offering to repair, a salvage yard offering parts-based value, and a specialist buyer offering a quick cash sale with free towing. If the repair estimate is R40,000 and the pre-accident value was R120,000, some owners prefer a competitive cash offer to avoid repair delays and transport logistics.
This guide aims to clarify who buys accident-damaged cars in SA and what sellers should expect. For owners wanting a straightforward sale process with free towing, handled paperwork and prompt payment, consider comparing offers from specialist buyers who operate nationwide and are experienced with deregistration and finance settlement.
