Learn signs that it’s time to sell a scrap car in SA, compare repair vs scrap, understand paperwork and get practical tips to protect value across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
Sell Sooner to Preserve Value
Avoid extended exposure to elements and active leaks that reduce parts and scrap value.
Compare Repair vs Scrap
If repair costs approach market value, selling as scrap is often the better financial choice.
Handle Paperwork Smartly
Buyers who manage deregistration and towing simplify the sale and lower your risk.
Knowing when to sell a scrap car can significantly affect the cash you receive and how quickly the sale completes. Market demand for parts, the condition of corrosion or mechanical components, seasonal demand, and outstanding finance all influence value. This guide explains practical signs that it’s time to sell, how the salvage market in South Africa works, and steps you can take to protect value whether you’re in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or a surrounding region.
Scrap and salvage buyers include breakers, part-rebuilders and exporters. Prices are influenced by demand for specific models and parts, the cost of repairable components, and logistics of collection. Selling earlier-before corrosion spreads or fluids leak-typically preserves more value for parts and metal recovery. If you want an overview of how a buyer handles collection and paperwork, see our How it works page.
Note: For non-running vehicles, handling transport and paperwork yourself can reduce net proceeds; services that include free towing and admin can be low risk and convenient across SA.
| Repair type | Typical repair cost (R, estimated) | Post-repair value retained (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bodywork & paint | R5,000-R25,000 | 60-85% (depends on age & model) |
| Major structural repair | R30,000-R150,000+ | 25-60% (often lower after insurer write-off) |
| Engine or transmission rebuild | R20,000-R100,000+ | 40-75% (highly model-dependent) |
Estimates above are illustrative and vary by make, model and mileage. For many older vehicles, repair costs quickly exceed the realistic resale benefit; that is a common tipping point to sell the car for scrap.
If your vehicle won’t start, see our Sell Non-Running Car page for guidance on valuation and collection logistics.
Deciding between repair and selling as scrap requires an honest comparison of repair costs, your intended use, and market demand. Repair if the vehicle will reliably serve you longer than the time it takes to recoup costs via use or resale. Sell if repair costs are a large proportion of the vehicle’s market value, or if you need cash and want to avoid ongoing holding costs.
A streamlined process reduces delays and protects value. Typical steps: collect clear photos and documentation, get an online valuation, accept a competitive cash offer, arrange collection via free towing where available, and complete paperwork including deregistration. Services that handle free nationwide towing and admin can be especially helpful in metro areas like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic damage | Small reduction; parts and resale value largely retained |
| Structural/frame damage | Significant reduction; often moved to salvage/wrecker market |
| Flood or fire damage | Major reduction; many components may be unusable, affects exportability |
Common administrative steps include providing proof of ownership, valid ID, and a completed deregistration or transfer form. South Africa uses eNatis systems for vehicle records; buyers who handle deregistration can save time. If the vehicle is under finance, the lender must be contacted and any settlement arranged before transfer of ownership. Keep records of the transaction and payment for your protection.
After the vehicle is collected, expect the buyer to handle paperwork and deregistration where agreed. Payment is typically released after collection and verification of documents. Retain the transfer record and payment proof. If the buyer arranged collection under a free towing service, check the collection note for condition discrepancies and keep a copy.
Sell sooner rather than later if the vehicle is exposed to elements, has known fluid leaks, or sits unused - these factors accelerate deterioration and reduce dismantling and scrap value. Conversely, if you can safely store the vehicle and wait for higher seasonal demand for parts of your model, a short delay may be worthwhile.
If your car is non-running or heavily damaged, our online valuation flow can clarify options quickly; learn about the non-running process on our Sell Non-Running Car page. For an overview of service steps and what to expect from buyers, the homepage includes process summaries and service areas across South Africa.
The information above is based on common industry practice in South Africa and is intended as practical guidance. Figures and ranges are estimates and will vary by vehicle, location and market conditions. When in doubt, obtain multiple valuations and confirm how the buyer handles towing, paperwork and deregistration before accepting an offer.
