Learn which documents are needed to scrap a car in South Africa: registration papers, ID, financier release, and practical steps for smooth deregistration and collection.
Essential Documents
Registration papers, ID and signed sale instruction are commonly required.
Finance & Liens
Notify financiers early; written release usually needed for deregistration.
Deregistration Steps
Buyer-assisted deregistration and nationwide collection speed up the process.
Scrapping a vehicle in South Africa involves more than handing over keys. Knowing what paperwork is needed to scrap a car in South Africa protects you legally, speeds up deregistration and helps you receive payment cleanly. This guide outlines common documents, who must sign, and how paperwork interacts with finance, insurance and the licensing system.
Deciding whether to repair or scrap depends on repair cost, vehicle value and safety. If repair estimates exceed a large percentage of the market value, scrapping can be the faster, lower-risk option. Consider costs in R and likely timescales before committing.
| Scenario | Typical consideration | Example outcome (SA context) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor accident (repair & roadworthy) | Repair cost low relative to value | Repair; retain most resale value |
| Severe structural damage | High repair cost, safety concerns | Scrap or sell to salvage market |
| Non-running / mechanical write-off | Repair uncertain; parts value matters | Scrap for parts or recycling |
Most legitimate scrapping or salvage transactions follow a clear sequence: confirm ownership and documents, obtain an offer, agree terms, sign transfer/scrapping paperwork, arrange collection and complete deregistration. If you use a specialist buyer, they will often handle towing and paperwork on your behalf.
For an overview of how a specialist buyer handles collections and admin, see the company How it works page: About / How it works.
Practical tip: Gather the vehicle registration document, your ID and any service or claims records before requesting offers - this speeds up verification and collection.
If your vehicle has visible accident damage or is non-running, specific pages such as the Sell Damaged Cars guide can clarify what information buyers will need to value the vehicle: Sell Damaged Cars.
Below are the most commonly required documents when scrapping a car in South Africa. Requirements vary slightly by province and buyer, so treat this as a comprehensive checklist rather than a legal form.
| Document | Why it’s needed | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Registration papers | Proves ownership for deregistration | Owner / provincial licensing office |
| ID / company docs | Confirms seller identity | Home Affairs / CIPC |
| Financier release | Clears any encumbrances | Finance provider |
Many scrapping buyers will assist with the deregistration process through provincial licensing or eNaTIS channels once paperwork and ID checks are complete. For vehicle owners who prefer a managed process, see the Sell Non-Running Car information which explains administrative support: Sell Non-Running Car.
Once the buyer collects the vehicle, they typically complete the signed sale or scrapping paperwork and start the deregistration process with the relevant licensing authority. Payment arrangements should be documented in the sale agreement; reputable buyers will confirm that deregistration has been lodged.
Processing times vary by province and whether finance or police clearance is involved. In many routine cases, deregistration and payment clearing can complete within 3-15 business days; if a vehicle is encumbered by finance, expect longer while settlement is arranged. These are estimates and depend on the parties involved.
| Damage type | Paperwork complexity |
|---|---|
| Accident written-off | Medium - insurer records and claim references may be requested |
| Flood or fire damage | Medium - clear disclosure required; risk assessments may be done |
| Non-running due to mechanical failure | Low - standard ownership and transfer documents usually suffice |
