Learn what happens to your car after selling it for scrap in South Africa: collection, deregistration, recycling, parts recovery and the paperwork you must keep.
Typical Post-Sale Routes
Parts reclamation, recycling and occasional rebuilds are common outcomes.
Key Paperwork to Keep
Get a written sale receipt, proof of transfer and deregistration evidence.
Maximise Your Outcome
Clear photos, honest descriptions and finance disclosure speed up settlement.
When you sell a vehicle for scrap in South Africa the car typically moves through several stages: transfer of ownership, collection and towing, de-registration or salvage paperwork, and finally recycling, parts reclamation or disposal. Understanding each step helps you protect your documentation, avoid liability and get paid quickly. This article explains the common routes a scrapped car takes and the legal and practical steps you should expect.
Buyers include licensed motor recyclers, salvage yards, panel-beaters who keep reusable parts, and specialised vehicle-collection services. They purchase cars for usable components, salvageable metals, or for dismantling and resale. Selling to an established buyer reduces the risk of delayed payment and paperwork headaches.
Deciding whether to repair or scrap depends on repair cost, vehicle market value, safety and how long you’ll have to wait for parts and labour. If repair estimates are a high fraction of market value, scrapping can be the practical option. Consider insurance position (written-off vehicles), ongoing storage costs and legal obligations.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (example, R) | Likely retained value if repaired |
|---|---|---|
| Minor accident (cosmetic, minor panel work) | R5,000-R20,000 | 70-90% of pre-accident value |
| Major structural damage | R30,000+ | 30-60% of pre-accident value |
| Mechanical failure (engine/gearbox) | R15,000-R60,000 | Variable - often under 60% |
These figures are illustrative, South Africa-specific ranges and not offers. Repair quotes vary by make, model, parts availability and labour rates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or surrounding regions.
Quick note: If your car is non-running or written off, consider the specialised online valuation and collection services that handle nationwide towing and paperwork to speed up sale. Our site explains this process in detail on the About / How it works page.
If you want to explore selling a non-running vehicle directly, our Sell Non-Running Car page outlines what buyers look for and the information you should supply.
Once you accept a scrap buyer’s offer the usual flow is: paperwork and ID checks, arranging free or paid towing, transfer of ownership or bill of sale, vehicle collection and final payment. Reputable buyers will provide a written agreement, handle deregistration where applicable, and supply proof of collection and payment.
Key documents and steps you should expect:
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Structural/frame damage | High negative impact |
| Engine/gearbox failure | Medium-high impact depending on parts value |
| Cosmetic/body damage | Low-medium impact; parts often salvageable |
| Flood or fire damage | High impact; electrical and interior often affected |
After collection the buyer typically completes dismantling and parts recovery within a short period. Recyclable metals are processed and sold to mills; hazardous fluids are handled per environmental requirements. You should receive a final receipt confirming transfer and payment. If the buyer handles deregistration, ask for proof of submission so you are no longer listed as the registered owner.
If you want a straightforward sale flow for a damaged vehicle, our information on selling damaged cars explains steps buyers commonly follow and how we handle towing and paperwork on a nationwide basis: Sell Damaged Cars.
These sources provide official guidance on registration and practical industry advice. Figures in the article are South Africa-focused estimates (shown in R) and will vary by region, model and market conditions.
