Learn the factors that influence scrap car offers in South Africa - damage type, parts demand, metal prices, paperwork and logistics - plus tips to improve your outcome.
Main factors
Condition, parts, metals, ownership and logistics set scrap value.
Repair vs scrap
Compare repair cost to retained market value before deciding.
Documentation matters
Clear title and deregistration affect offers and transfer speed.
When you ask what determines scrap car price in South Africa, several practical factors combine to set an offer. Scrap or salvage valuations reflect the vehicle's condition, usable parts, metal content, local demand for parts, administrative status and collection logistics. This guide explains each factor with South Africa-specific examples and shows how sellers can improve outcomes when a car is no longer roadworthy.
Note: If your vehicle is still under finance, the outstanding bond must be settled or transferred before ownership can change. Buyers will ask about finance status and may reduce an offer to cover administrative risk.
Deciding whether to repair or scrap depends on repair costs compared with the expected retained value after repair. The table below uses illustrative R ranges (estimates) and percentage retained values to show typical scenarios in South Africa; actual figures vary by model, age and local demand.
| Repair cost (illustrative) | Typical retained market value (approx.) | When scrapping is commonly chosen |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R15,000 | 70%-90% of pre-damage value | Minor repairs - usually repair |
| R15,000 - R50,000 | 40%-70% of pre-damage value | Moderate damage; consider repair vs sell |
| R50,000+ | Often below 40% of pre-damage value | Severe/structural damage - scrapping likely |
How a particular damage type affects an offer depends on salvageability and repair complexity. The table below summarises typical impacts on offers for South African market conditions.
| Damage type | Typical offer impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic | Low impact | Parts and metal largely reusable |
| Front/rear bumper & panels | Medium impact | Repair cost moderate; usable mechanicals may retain value |
| Structural/frame damage | High impact | Limited resale; higher dismantling costs |
| Flood/water damage | Severe impact | Electrical systems often compromised; parts lower demand |
| Catalytic converter theft | Medium to high impact | Expensive to replace; reduces scrap & parts value |
For a quick overview of how a specialist buyer handles non-running or damaged vehicles, see our homepage and the About / How it works page for process details.
Choose repair when the total cost keeps the vehicle's post-repair market value comfortably above repair expense and insured replacement costs. Sell or scrap when repair costs approach or exceed typical retained value, or when structural or flood damage creates long-term reliability risks. Business fleet owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban often prefer fast disposal to avoid downtime and storage costs.
For sellers of non-running vehicles, our Sell Non-Running Car page explains typical timelines and documentation needed. If the vehicle has visible accident damage, see the Sell Damaged Cars page for examples of the intake process.
Clear title is essential. If a vehicle is financed, the bondholder’s consent or settlement is required. Buyers will ask for ID, proof of ownership (registration papers), and may assist with deregistration via eNaTIS or the relevant provincial traffic department. Always confirm whether the buyer will manage deregistration and whether any fees apply.
After collection, the buyer will complete paperwork, verify vehicle identity and proceed with dismantling or salvage resale. Payment timing varies by buyer processes but reputable buyers will provide clear payment terms. Keep copies of all transfer paperwork and confirm deregistration steps were completed where applicable.
In metro areas like Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, part demand can be higher for popular models, improving offers for vehicles with intact mechanical components. In remote areas, logistical costs can reduce offers unless the buyer offers free nationwide towing. When in doubt, get multiple valuations and insist on written offer terms.
