Find out the key factors affecting your damaged car's value in South Africa: damage type, paperwork, demand, and practical steps for maximising your cash offer.
If you own a car that has accident damage, mechanical faults, is non-running or has been written off, you might be wondering: how much is my vehicle actually worth now, and what factors influence the offer I get? In South Africa, damaged car values depend on a blend of vehicle specifics, damage type, market demand, and admin factors like paperwork clarity. Understanding these elements can help you set realistic expectations-and even improve your potential cash return.
| Vehicle Value (Pre-Damage) | Estimated Repair Cost | Value after Repair | Net Value Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| R120,000 | R80,000 | R100,000 | R100,000 (repair + value drop) |
| R75,000 | R40,000 | R60,000 | R55,000 (repair + value drop) |
This table shows how high repair costs compared to pre-accident value often mean selling is the more practical choice.
| Damage Type | Average Offer Impact (%) | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Accident (bodywork) | -30% to -60% | Panel, structural, airbag issues increase discount |
| Mechanical (engine/gearbox) | -35% to -65% | Non-running & unknown faults |
| Flood/Fire | -45% to -80% | Electrical, corrosion, safety risk |
| Hail, Cosmetic | -15% to -40% | Often repairable, less structural loss |
Actual offers depend on make/model/year, severity and documentation. These ranges reflect typical market impacts in South Africa.
For specific guidance, visit our Sell Damaged Cars guide or read about selling non-running vehicles in South Africa.
At Sell Your Damaged Car, our offers are transparent and data-driven. We use your car's age, mileage, make/model, detailed condition and damage photos to estimate true market demand-balancing resale, parts, or salvage value. The better your documentation, the more accurately we can quote.
Once your vehicle is collected, Sell Your Damaged Car processes deregistration and notifies you of completion. Payment is transferred directly after pick up. Vehicles may be dismantled for parts, resold for salvage, or recycled, depending on their assessed value.
This hassle-free process is trusted by hundreds of South African owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond, and is especially helpful for those with accident damage, mechanical failures, or non-runners. For further advice or to compare selling options, see our About Us and Sell Damaged Cars pages.
