Explore how the scrap car market in Cape Town works, factors that affect offers, legal paperwork in South Africa, and practical tips to maximise value when selling a damaged or non-running vehicle.
Local market drivers
Parts demand, towing costs and scrap metal prices shape offers in Cape Town.
Paperwork matters
Clear ownership and resolved finance make transactions smoother and quicker.
Make informed choices
Compare repair costs, parts value and scrap offers before deciding.
The market for scrap cars in Cape Town is shaped by local demand for parts, salvage resale routes, and logistical costs for collection and processing. Scrapyards, dismantlers and specialist buyers source vehicles for usable parts, metal recycling and certified salvage resale. Prices are influenced by vehicle make and model, age, extent of damage, local parts demand and the prevailing price of scrap metal. If you own a non-running, accident-damaged or written-off vehicle in Cape Town, understanding these drivers helps you decide whether to sell as scrap, list for parts, or pursue repair.
Note: Market values vary daily. The figures and examples below are illustrative estimates to show how different factors change outcomes in Cape Town.
Deciding whether to repair or sell a damaged car depends on repair cost, remaining market value after repair, personal time and risk tolerance. For many Cape Town owners the tipping point is when repair estimates approach or exceed the vehicle’s practical resale value, or when repair logistics (sourcing parts, long workshop lead times) make the process costly and slow.
| Scenario | Typical repair cost (R, est.) | Value retained after repair (R, est.) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor bodywork & mechanical repair | R5,000 - R20,000 | R10,000 - R40,000 |
| Major structural or engine repair | R20,000 - R80,000+ | R5,000 - R30,000 |
| Non-running / written-off | N/A (repair not cost-effective) | R1,000 - R25,000 |
| Damage type | Typical effect on offers |
|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic damage | Small reduction; parts and tyres often valuable. |
| Structural/front-end collision | Significant reduction; engine and chassis condition critical. |
| Flood or water damage | Large reduction due to electrical and corrosion risks. |
| Fire damage | Often low offers; limited parts salvageable. |
For more detail about selling badly damaged or non-running vehicles, see our explanatory pages on how the process works and the types of cars we buy: About / How it works and Sell Damaged Cars.
Most professional buyers follow a simple flow: online or phone valuation, conditional offer, documentation check, organised collection and payment. Sell Your Damaged Car streamlines this for Cape Town owners by offering remote valuation based on photos and vehicle details, transparent offers that reflect local parts demand, and arranged collection. If you want a closer look at selling a non-running vehicle specifically, our Sell Non-Running Car resource explains additional considerations.
When selling a scrap or written-off car in Cape Town you must ensure clear ownership and follow deregistration or transfer procedures. Buyers will ask for the vehicle registration document, a valid ID or company documentation, and a clear record of finance status. If there is outstanding finance registered against the vehicle, this must usually be settled or disclosed; many buyers will not complete a purchase until the finance status is resolved.
After collection the vehicle typically goes to a dismantler, salvage yard or recycler. The buyer will complete transfer or deregistration processes and release payment per the agreed terms. For fleet owners or private sellers in Cape Town, request written confirmation of deregistration or sale completion. If the vehicle was insured or under claim, coordinate with your insurer before finalising the sale to avoid overlap in settlements.
Example A: An older hatchback with front-end damage and a good engine may attract better offers from local dismantlers because parts are in steady demand across the Western Cape. Example B: A flooded vehicle often yields lower offers due to electrical and corrosion issues; in such cases selling for parts or to a recycler can be more efficient than attempting full repair.
For an overview of the service model used by many specialist buyers nationwide, review the main site’s homepage for the standard online valuation and collection workflow: Sell Your Damaged Car homepage. Understanding typical timelines and paperwork expectations will help you decide whether to sell now or pursue repair.
