Learn how scrap car valuation works in South Africa, what affects offers, legal paperwork, and practical steps to prepare your damaged or non-running vehicle.
What Drives Scrap Value
Parts demand, metal weight, damage type and logistics determine valuation.
Paperwork & Legal Issues
Check ownership, finance status and deregistration options before selling.
Prepare to Improve Offers
Provide clear photos, accurate details and multiple written valuations.
If your car is written off, non-running, flood- or fire-damaged, or simply beyond economical repair, knowing how scrap car valuation works helps you make better decisions. Valuation determines whether you keep the vehicle for parts, sell to a salvage yard, or use a specialist buyer. This guide explains the main factors that influence valuation in the South African context and shows practical steps to improve clarity and outcomes.
Scrap car valuation is typically driven by the usable components, the vehicle's metal weight, the market demand for specific parts, and administrative factors such as clear title and debt status. For South Africa, logistics and regional salvage demand (for example in Johannesburg vs Cape Town) also influence offers because collection costs and local dismantler demand vary.
| Scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Major structural damage | R40,000 - R120,000 | 10-30% |
| Engine replacement | R20,000 - R60,000 | 25-50% |
| Minor body and panel repairs | R5,000 - R25,000 | 50-75% |
Note: figures above are illustrative estimates in R and will vary by vehicle, parts availability and region. They are included to show how repair cost relative to market value affects decisions about scrapping versus repairing.
| Damage type | Typical impact on valuation |
|---|---|
| Flood damage | Severely reduces offers due to hidden electrical/corrosion risks |
| Front- or rear-end collision | Depends on structural damage; minor panels have small impact |
| Fire damage | Highly negative - electronics and wiring often destroyed |
| Non-running mechanical failure | Valuation based on parts and recoverable components |
For owners who want a clear view of the sales process and buyer responsibilities, our About / How it works page explains common workflow and document steps in more detail: About / How it works.
If your vehicle is a non-runner and you want to understand options for salvage or parting out, see the Sell Non-Running Car page for practical next steps and checklist guidance: Sell Non-Running Car.
Deciding between scrapping and repairing depends on repair cost, remaining market value, and how much time and risk you are willing to accept. In South Africa, age, parts availability and the salvage market demand for specific models are particularly important. Consider scrapping when repair costs exceed a sensible percentage of the car’s market value or when structural damage raises safety or compliance concerns.
Nationwide logistics matter. Free towing and collection from metros like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban can offset lower scrap offers because it removes transport cost and admin hassle. Ask whether a buyer handles deregistration and outstanding finance, especially if you are in a smaller town.
Scenario A: A 2010 hatchback with a failed engine but intact bodywork may fetch more from a parts buyer than a heavily structurally damaged car of the same age. Scenario B: A late-model SUV with cosmetic rear-end damage often retains higher parts demand, especially if the engine and drivetrain are sellable. These practical differences underline why valuation always depends on specific condition and market demand.
Specialist buyers who focus on damaged and salvage vehicles can streamline collection, paperwork and payment. They frequently offer free towing nationwide, help with deregistration, and manage clearance when a vehicle is under finance. For an explanation of our process and how we handle vehicles in any condition, see our Sell Damaged Cars resource: Sell Damaged Cars.
If you want to review an example of the full service workflow from upload to collection and payment, our homepage summarises the online process and scope of services: Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
Understanding scrap car valuation in South Africa helps you set realistic expectations and choose the route that minimises risk and admin. Use accurate information, compare offers and confirm what each buyer includes - such as free towing and deregistration support - before making your decision.
