Learn typical towing and storage fee ranges, how storm damage affects cash offers, and steps to minimise costs when selling a storm-damaged car in South Africa.
Know the True Costs
Include towing and daily storage when deciding to repair or sell a storm-damaged car.
Free Collection Matters
Buyers who provide free towing and paperwork reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
Estimate Repair vs Value
If repair costs approach market value, selling as-is is often the smarter option.
If a storm has damaged your vehicle-hail, wind, fallen trees or flooding-you face choices: repair, store, or sell as-is. Selling a storm-damaged car often avoids repair bills and ongoing storage fees, but there are specific costs and logistics to consider. This guide explains typical charges (towing and storage), how those costs affect offers, and practical steps for South African owners to protect value and move their vehicle quickly.
Offers for storm-damaged cars are calculated from the vehicle's pre-storm market value, minus anticipated repair costs and the ease of resale to salvage buyers. Extensive hail, structural or flood damage typically reduces the competitive cash offer more than cosmetic panel damage. Where storage or towing is required, these costs may be reflected in net offers unless the buyer covers collection.
| Repair type | Estimated repair cost (R) | Likely value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor hail / panel dents | R3,000 - R12,000 (estimate) | Partial recovery; market value may rise slightly |
| Glass replacement (windscreen) | R1,200 - R6,000 | High retention if no structural damage |
| Flood damage (mechanical/electrical) | R15,000 - R80,000+ | Often low; many buyers prefer salvage route |
| Structural/roof collapse | R30,000 - R120,000+ | Usually poor recovery; salvage market likely |
Note: figures above are estimates for South Africa and will vary by region, vehicle age and parts availability. Use these ranges to guide decisions rather than as firm quotes.
If you’re weighing repair vs sell, include these ongoing storage costs. For example, 30 days at R150/day is R4,500-sometimes more than minor repairs. Many sellers avoid these fees by choosing buyers who provide free collection.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost versus retained value, vehicle importance to you, and time. Consider selling if:
For a fast valuation and to compare options, use a trusted buyer who handles collection and paperwork-this can remove the burden of towing and storage from your decision. Visit the How it works page to understand the collection and paperwork steps, and check practical guidance on selling non-running vehicles on the Sell Non-Running Car page.
A streamlined selling process reduces the time your vehicle spends in storage and the fees you pay. Typical steps for selling a storm-damaged car in South Africa include online valuation, offer, collection, paperwork and payment. Many reputable buyers offer free towing and complete admin including deregistration to simplify the transfer.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Superficial hail dents | Moderate reduction; often repairable cost-effectively |
| Glass damage | Small impact if only windscreen, larger if multiple windows |
| Flood / water ingress | Major reduction; buyers factor in electrical risk and mechanical rebuild |
| Structural / roof collapse | Significant reduction; usually sold for salvage |
When selling a storm-damaged vehicle, ensure legal transfer and proper deregistration if required. If the vehicle is under finance, inform the financier-settlement may be needed before transfer. If you’re unsure, the buyer’s team can often coordinate with your financier and help with the administrative steps. For a clear view of how we handle paperwork and collection, see our main site overview at the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage and the detailed Sell Damaged Cars page.
After a buyer collects a storm-damaged car, they typically process the paperwork (transfer of ownership and deregistration if applicable) and settle any agreed payment. If the vehicle was under finance, the buyer and seller coordinate settlement. Expect payment timing to be confirmed in writing-many buyers arrange near-instant payment after collection, subject to identity verification and paperwork completion.
Example: A private owner in Cape Town with hail-damaged panels and an intact engine may receive a competitive cash offer that covers free local collection, avoiding a R1,500-R3,000 repair bill and storage fees. A fleet manager in Durban with multiple flood-damaged vehicles may prefer a salvage sale to avoid accumulating daily yard fees across several units-buyers who offer bulk collection and paperwork support are often the simplest route.
