Compare repair cost ranges and retained value for storm-damaged cars in Gauteng. Learn when to repair, when to sell, and how paperwork and free towing factor into your decision.
Estimate Repair vs Retained Value
Compare South African repair cost ranges (R) with expected value retained after repairs.
When to Sell in Gauteng
Consider selling if repair costs approach or exceed 40-50% of market value.
Fast, Local Comparison
Use online offers and local quotes to decide - free towing and paperwork ease selling.
Severe weather - hail, heavy winds, fallen debris and flash flooding - can leave vehicles in Gauteng with anything from cosmetic dents to major water or electrical damage. This guide looks at typical repair cost ranges in South Africa, how those costs compare to retained market value, and practical factors to weigh when deciding to repair or sell a storm-damaged car in Gauteng.
Gauteng’s high vehicle density and active salvage demand (Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni) affect both repair availability and parts pricing. Labour rates and panel-beater capacity can be higher in metro areas, while demand from breakers and resellers may support stronger offers for repairable cars. Consider local repair quotes alongside potential cash offers when evaluating options.
Note: the figures above are South Africa-specific estimates (R currency) and depend on vehicle age, parts availability and severity. Always get local quotes - for a streamlined valuation you can compare with an online offer via our Sell Damaged Cars page.
| Damage Level | Estimated Repair Cost (R) | Typical Value Retained After Repair (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor (dents, glass) | R2,000 - R12,000 | 85-95% |
| Moderate (panels, lights) | R10,000 - R50,000 | 70-85% |
| Severe (flood/electrical) | R30,000+ | 30-65% (may be lower) |
These ranges reflect common outcomes in Gauteng’s market. For non-running or heavily water-damaged cars, repair may cost more than the value gained - in those cases selling to a specialist can be faster and lower risk. Learn how our process works and get a quick comparison by visiting our About / How it works page.
If you want a fast indication without obtaining multiple panel-beater quotes, submit details on our Sell Non-Running Car page to compare a cash offer with local repair estimates.
A clear process helps owners weigh options. Typical steps for both routes are listed below so you can compare effort, time and likely net position.
Selling to a specialist in Gauteng typically reduces time and admin: upload photos and details, receive an offer, accept if suitable, and schedule collection. Key inclusions often are free towing, paperwork handling (including deregistration help) and fast payment - reducing downtime and logistics for private owners and fleets.
| Damage Type | Typical Offer Impact | Notes (Gauteng market) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor hail/dents | Small reduction | Often cost-effective to repair; offers reflect less perceived risk. |
| Panel or glass damage | Moderate reduction | Parts availability affects offers, especially for older imports. |
| Flooded / electrical | Large reduction | High risk; many buyers classify as salvage. |
When selling a storm-damaged car in Gauteng, ensure you understand deregistration, outstanding finance and the need for a proper bill of sale. If the vehicle is financed, an early settlement or lender authorisation is usually required before transfer. Specialist buyers often help with deregistration and paperwork, which reduces risk and administrative load for sellers.
For a practical, immediate comparison in Gauteng, use our online valuation and see how an offer stacks up against repair quotes. Learn more about what we buy and the nationwide collection service on our homepage.
After you accept an offer and we collect the vehicle in Gauteng, the buyer typically completes transfer and deregistration paperwork, arranges transport to a repairer, reseller or salvage yard, and processes payment. Payment timelines vary but specialist services aim for fast payment once paperwork is verified.
Example: a 2012 sedan with moderate hail and a cracked rear window. Local repair estimate: R18,000 (parts & labour, 2-4 weeks). Specialist cash offer: depends on condition and market, but selling avoids towing costs, multi-week downtime and admin. Use an online offer to compare quickly before committing to repairs - our valuation tools on the Sell Damaged Cars or Sell Non-Running Car pages.
