Detailed South African guide on how to renew an expired license disc for accident-damaged, non-running or written-off vehicles. Includes legal options and paperwork tips.
If your vehicle is damaged or non-running and its license disc has expired, you may feel stuck. Whether you plan to repair, sell, deregister, or keep the car off the road, South African law requires you to keep license fees up to date-or formally de-register your vehicle. This guide explains, step by step, how to renew an expired license disc for a damaged vehicle, handles typical paperwork, and highlights your options depending on your plans for the car.
You must renew a license disc annually. If the license is expired and the car is off the road due to accidents, mechanical failure, or being written-off, you have three main options:
The renewal process for a damaged car is very similar to a running vehicle, but you may need extra documents to explain the car's status if questioned. Here are the standard steps:
Here's a snapshot of typical requirements and fees:
| Item | Typical Requirement |
|---|---|
| ID Document | Original + copy |
| Old License Disc | Expired disc accepted |
| Proof of Address | Recent (within 3 months) |
| ALV Form | Completed and signed |
| Fees | R300+ per annum (varies by province/vehicle type; plus arrears) |
If your car is not roadworthy or cannot reach the traffic office, you do not need to present the actual vehicle to renew the disc (only for roadworthy tests or re-registration). For cars written-off or permanently damaged, you may be eligible to de-register the vehicle as 'permanently unfit'. To do so, submit a form (RVC or equivalent), accompanied by a police clearance and supporting documents. This ceases license fees and penalties from accumulating.
| Action | When to Consider | Key Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Renew License | Plan to repair, sell privately, keep | Car remains legally registered; eligible for sale/repair |
| Deregister | Permanently unfit, scrapping, written-off | No further fees; cannot be driven or re-licensed unless restored |
| Sell to a Specialist | Want hassle-free process & admin done for you | Specialist handles paperwork, collection & licensing |
