FAQ for South African sellers of damaged, non-running or written-off cars. Learn about offers, paperwork, finance and how the sale process works nationwide.
Common Seller Questions
Answers on offers, finance, deregistration and timelines.
How Offers Are Calculated
Based on condition, market value and salvage demand.
Practical Next Steps
Submit photos, get an offer, accept and let the buyer handle towing and paperwork.
This FAQ explains how damaged car sales work in South Africa, what to expect with offers, and the admin you’ll need to complete. It focuses on practical steps for private owners and small-fleet managers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and beyond.
Common seller concerns include: is repair worth it, how offers are calculated, what paperwork is required (including deregistration), options if the vehicle is still under finance, and logistics like towing and payment timing.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair cost, the car’s pre-accident market value, safety implications, and how long you can wait. For many written-off or non-running vehicles, selling saves time, avoids towing and storage costs, and transfers administrative risk to the buyer.
| Typical repair range (estimate) | Likely value retained after repair | Seller consideration |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R20,000 (minor panel/paint) | High - close to market value | Repair may be worth doing if safety is unaffected |
| R20,000 - R60,000 (structural, engine work) | Moderate - uncertain resale premium | Consider selling if repair exceeds a large % of market value |
| R60,000+ (major rebuilds or total loss) | Low - often below pre-accident value | Selling as salvage or for parts is often more practical |
| Damage type | Offer impact (general) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minor panel/paint | Low impact | Offers remain competitive if no frame damage |
| Structural/frame damage | High impact | Specialist repair needed; salvage demand varies |
| Flood / water damage | High impact | Electrical and corrosion risks lower resale value |
| Mechanical failure (non-running) | Variable | Depends on engine/transmission condition and parts value |
These tables give typical ranges and impacts; every vehicle is assessed on age, mileage, model desirability and actual condition. For a quick valuation, our online process accepts photos and details - start at the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage to upload details.
A typical professional buyer workflow in South Africa follows simple stages: you submit vehicle information and photos; you receive an obligation-free cash indication; if you accept, the buyer arranges paperwork and towing; vehicle is collected and payment is released. This removes the need to source a tow or manage deregistration yourself.
For an explanation of our buyer background and operations, see the company About / How it works page.
When you sell a vehicle that’s damaged or written off, certain legal steps are typically required: a signed transfer of ownership, notification to eNaTIS/Traffic Authorities for deregistration or change of ownership, and settlement of any outstanding finance. If the vehicle is still under finance, the lender’s consent and account settlement are necessary before final transfer.
If a car is bonded, contact your finance provider to request a settlement figure. Many professional buyers will coordinate payoff with the lender so the seller receives any surplus after the bond is cleared. Check your credit and finance obligations with the National Credit Regulator for guidance on rights and procedures.
After you accept an offer and the vehicle is collected, the buyer usually completes transfer paperwork and initiates payment. Payment timing varies but professional services commonly release funds shortly after collection once documentation is verified. The buyer will arrange deregistration or transfer with traffic authorities when required.
Examples of typical timelines (estimates): inspection and offer - same day to 48 hours after submission; collection - within 1-7 days depending on location; paperwork and payment verification - 1-5 business days post-collection. These are illustrative; always confirm exact timelines with the buyer.
If you have a non-running vehicle, see our dedicated guidance on selling a non-running car at the Sell Non-Running Car page. For general damaged vehicles, our Sell Damaged Cars page explains accepted conditions and next steps.
If you need a fast, transparent valuation after reading this FAQ, use the online submission form on our homepage to upload photos and details. The process is designed for South African sellers who want clear next steps, free towing options and assistance with paperwork.
