Answers to common questions on selling wrecked bakkies: paperwork, valuations, free towing, legal requirements and maximising your offer. South Africa-focused.
A wrecked bakkie-from accident-damaged pickups to non-running workhorses-can leave owners across South Africa wondering about their options. Whether you're a private individual in Johannesburg or a fleet owner in Durban, knowing how to sell a wrecked bakkie, what paperwork you'll need, and how offers are determined is crucial. This FAQ covers all the essential steps, special legal notes, and tips to ensure a smooth transaction with minimal hassle.
A "wrecked" bakkie generally refers to any pickup that's been seriously damaged by accident, flood, fire, mechanical failure, or written off by insurers. Even if the bakkie can't drive or has extensive structural damage, it still holds salvage value for spares or recycling.
| Damage Severity | Avg. Repair Cost (R) | % Value Retained | When to Sell? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor panel damage | 10,000 - 20,000 | 80 - 90% | Consider repair |
| Engine/gearbox failure | 30,000 - 60,000 | 60 - 75% | Sell if high km/older |
| Written-off or chassis bent | 50,000 - 100,000+ | 40 - 50% | Usually better to sell |
If repair costs exceed the post-repair value-or if safety and reliability can't be guaranteed-selling is often the smarter move, especially for older or high-mileage bakkies.
Use our online form to upload your bakkie's make, model, year, mileage, detailed images of the damage, and key documents. A transparent offer is made based on current value and the type of damage-no need to fix the vehicle or arrange transport in advance.
We handle the administrative paperwork, including deregistration with the relevant licensing authority.
| Damage Type | Impact on Offer |
|---|---|
| Front-end collision | Reduces value; major engine/frame damage lowers offer |
| Engine seized/non-running | Offer based on salvage/parts demand |
| Flood/fire damage | Significant deduction for potential hidden issues |
| Cosmetic damage | Least impact; minor adjustment |
The offer also considers make/model, year, availability of parts, and current South African salvage market trends. Older bakkies or those with rare parts may see stronger demand.
Once collection is confirmed, payment is released immediately and electronically to your nominated South African bank account. Verification is provided at handover, ensuring both security and transparency.
If your bakkie is financed, a settlement letter from your lender is required; any remaining balance is settled before you receive the balance of the offer. For fleet or business vehicles, company proof and authorization may be necessary, but the sale process remains largely unchanged.
Yes, non-running, incomplete, or partially stripped bakkies can still be sold for salvage. Free nationwide towing is always included, even from locations outside main cities like Cape Town, Pretoria, or Bloemfontein.
Upon agreed collection, our team completes a quick inspection, finalises the paperwork, and ensures all legal steps are covered. Payment is made before the bakkie is towed away. Deregistration is processed so that you no longer have legal responsibility for the vehicle, which protects you from any future fines or liability issues.
