Legal checklist for selling a damaged, non-running or written-off car in Johannesburg. Find required documents, finance steps and practical seller protections.
Ownership & Finance Checks
Confirm title, lender settlement and get documentation before collection.
Paperwork & Deregistration
Ensure transfer or deregistration is completed to remove future liability.
Document Condition Carefully
Photos, service history and a signed sale agreement protect both parties.
If you own an accident-damaged, non-running or written-off vehicle in Johannesburg, understanding the legal and administrative steps helps avoid delays, liability and unexpected costs. This guide explains what to check before you sell, how paperwork is handled in South Africa, and practical examples relevant to private owners and small fleets in Gauteng.
Consider selling when repair estimates, downtime and additional risks outweigh the vehicle's remaining value. For many Johannesburg owners, factors such as immediate cash needs, fleet uptime requirements and the high cost of parts and labour in metro workshops tip the decision toward selling. Below is a simple comparative table to help decide - figures are illustrative estimates in R and will vary by model, year and damage extent.
| Repair cost (estimate) | Typical decision | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under R10,000 | Repair likely | Minor bodywork or parts replacement; keep receipts. |
| R10,000-R40,000 | Case-by-case | Consider vehicle age, market demand and downtime costs. |
| Over R40,000 | Selling often preferable | Major structural or engine repairs; salvage market may be better option. |
A streamlined sale reduces risk and effort. The usual steps are: record condition and photos, check finance status, confirm the vehicle title, agree terms, and complete transfer or deregistration. Specialist buyers often offer assistance with towing and paperwork - see our explanation of the overall process on the About / How it works page for process details specific to Sell Your Damaged Car.
Practical note for Johannesburg owners: urban theft or environmental exposure can worsen stored damage. If you plan to sell, act promptly to avoid further value loss and keep photographs dated.
If your vehicle is non-running, you can read specific guidance on selling non-running vehicles on our Sell Non-Running Car page. That page explains logistics, likely documentation and what to expect for towing and collection.
South Africa has specific requirements when transferring or deregistering a vehicle. The checklist below focuses on legal documents and steps sellers in Johannesburg should prepare. Where the buyer arranges collection, confirm who handles deregistration and how payment is processed to avoid remaining liability.
Do not hand over keys or allow collection without a signed sale agreement and clear proof of payment. If a vehicle is collected by a buyer who later fails to register it, you may remain linked in records unless deregistration or transfer is completed. Specialist buyers often handle deregistration on your behalf; verify this in writing and keep copies of all transaction records. For a detailed overview of selling damaged cars and what we accept, see our Sell Damaged Cars page.
Below is a high-level guide showing how different damage types commonly affect buyer interest. Terms like High/Medium/Low describe relative impact, not specific values.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Structural/frame damage | High | Often major effect; buyers account for repair complexity and safety considerations. |
| Engine/transmission failure | High | Non-running drivetrain issues reduce market options to salvage or parting out. |
| Cosmetic/body damage | Medium | Repairable with panel/paint work; extent and age of vehicle affect offers. |
| Flood or fire damage | High | Specialist assessment required; buyers price risk of hidden faults. |
After the vehicle is collected, ensure you receive written confirmation of collection and a receipt for payment. Ask for evidence of deregistration or transfer once completed. For sellers across South Africa (including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban), the company homepage outlines nationwide service coverage and typical timelines for paperwork completion - see our homepage for more service details.
A small logistics company with a written-off delivery van should request a financier settlement statement, document the vehicle condition, and insist on a buyer-handled deregistration. This reduces admin burden on the fleet manager and accelerates replacement planning. Typical admin time to finalise transfer or deregistration can range from a few days to several weeks depending on lender and licensing office workloads; plan accordingly.
