Learn when to repair or sell a car with engine failure in South Africa. Practical steps, paperwork, valuation factors and tips to improve offers.
Assess Repair vs Sell
Compare estimated repair costs (R) to remaining market value before deciding.
Prepare Clear Evidence
Photos, service history and honest condition notes improve offers.
Know the Paperwork
Transfer, deregistration and finance settlement are core steps in SA.
If you are selling a car with engine failure, you face choices: repair, sell privately, or sell to a specialist buyer. Repair costs can be high and uncertain; selling as-is can save time and ongoing expense. This guide explains when selling is often the sensible option, how offers are formed in South Africa, and practical steps to protect your interest while moving the vehicle on.
An engine failure can make a vehicle non-running immediately and expensive to repair. For many owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounding areas the cost, time and risk of repair outweigh the remaining market value of the car. Specialist buyers purchase vehicles in any condition, handle collection and paperwork, and allow owners to avoid ongoing storage, towing bills and negotiation with private buyers who may lowball a non-running car.
Deciding whether to repair depends on estimated repair cost, remaining market value, your personal needs and how long you plan to keep the vehicle. Below is a simple framework and a sample repair-cost comparison table (estimates shown in R and are illustrative; actual costs vary by make, model and region).
| Scenario | Typical repair range (R) * | Estimated value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor internal failure (e.g., timing belt, sensors) | R5,000 - R20,000 | 70-90% of pre-failure market value |
| Major engine rebuild or replacement | R20,000 - R80,000+ | 60-85% (dependent on vehicle age) |
| Total loss / seized engine on older car | Repair often not economical | Sale as salvage or parts |
*Estimates vary by workshop, parts availability and vehicle model. In many cases a specialist buyer can purchase the car for salvage or parts, avoiding repair costs and storage fees.
Buyers consider the car's overall market value, cost to repair or sell as parts, towing logistics and demand in the salvage market. The table below summarises typical damage categories and their usual impact on offers for South African market conditions.
| Condition | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Engine seized / catastrophic failure | Lower offers; buyer values parts and scrap weight |
| Repairable mechanical fault | Higher offers if repair is predictable and costed |
| Non-running but cosmetically sound | Better offers due to intact resale or rebuild potential |
In metros like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban there is active demand for parts and salvage; rural locations may attract slightly lower offers after accounting for towing distance. If you want to understand how specialist buyers operate and the typical turnaround, see our explanation of how the process works on the company About / How it works page.
If the car does not start, you can still get an offer with clear photos and a concise description. For guidance aimed specifically at non-running vehicles, review our Sell Non-Running Car page which explains the typical information buyers need.
Specialist buyers follow a straightforward flow: submit vehicle details and photos online, receive an offer based on condition and market factors, accept or decline the offer, then arrange collection and paperwork. Many services provide free towing and can assist with deregistration - details that reduce hassle for sellers across South Africa.
If your car still has a finance balance, inform your lender early. Specialist buyers often work with financiers to settle the bond as part of the sale, but you should confirm the process and any settlement figures before accepting an offer.
Legal transfer and deregistration are key steps. In South Africa the seller must sign the necessary transfer forms and notify their licensing authority where applicable. A buyer that handles paperwork reduces your administrative load - check whether the service includes deregistration and settlement letters if the vehicle is bonded.
For more detail on selling damaged vehicles and the administrative steps buyers typically handle, see our Sell Damaged Cars resource and the company homepage for broad service details.
After the buyer collects the vehicle (often via free towing), the agreed payment process begins and paperwork is completed. Typical practice in South Africa includes the buyer handling transfer forms and providing proof of payment. Retain copies of all signed documents and confirmation of payment until the transaction is fully reflected in your bank and eNaTIS records.
A private owner in Durban with a 10-year-old sedan and a seized engine chose to sell to a specialist buyer rather than fund an uncertain rebuild. The buyer arranged free towing, settled the paperwork with the seller and paid the agreed sum shortly after collection. A small business fleet manager in Johannesburg sold three older non-running units to a salvage buyer to clear yard space and recover working components for other fleet vehicles.
The figures and scenarios above are illustrative and based on common repair ranges in South Africa; actual quotes depend on vehicle make, model and local labour/parts costs. When preparing to sell a car with engine failure, documenting condition clearly and choosing a buyer who handles towing and paperwork will reduce hassle and speed up settlement.
