Unsure whether to sell or scrap your car in Johannesburg? Explore key differences, legal advice, and tips to get cash for your damaged or non-running vehicle.
Johannesburg drivers often face a tough decision when a car is written off, severely damaged, or won't start. Should you sell your car as-is for cash, or look for a local scrapyard to dismantle it? Your decision affects not just your wallet, but also time, paperwork and risk. This guide compares your main options for getting rid of unwanted vehicles in Johannesburg and nearby Gauteng areas.
| Scenario | Consider Selling | Consider Scrapping |
|---|---|---|
| Minor accident, engine runs | Higher value, repairable | - |
| Major accident, written-off | Sell as damaged for salvage | If shell is beyond salvage |
| Mechanical failure, non-runner | Sell for parts/value | If not repairable |
| Flood or fire damage | May have salvage value | Severe cases often scrapped |
If your car has accident damage or serious faults but still holds market or parts value (for instance, late-model brands or popular makes in Joburg), consider selling it to a specialist buyer. Companies like Sell Your Damaged Car offer competitive cash offers, free towing across Johannesburg, and full assistance with paperwork-including deregistration.
Traditional scrapyards pay based on vehicle weight or recyclable metals, not market value. Some may fetch the car, but many require you to arrange costly towing, and you'll need to ensure all legal paperwork (like Natis deregistration) is completed yourself. Scrap value in Johannesburg fluctuates, but typically ranges from R1,500-R5,000 for a shell, depending on current metal prices and the car's size.
| Damage Type | Typical Offer Impact |
|---|---|
| Minor Cosmetic | Low reduction, high salvage value |
| Engine Fault | Moderate impact, demand for spares matters |
| Severe Crash/Written Off | Larger reduction, depends on parts value and year |
| Flood or Fire Damage | Significant reduction, demand for undamaged parts key |
For Johannesburg residents, selling your damaged car to a specialist offers the fastest, safest, and most transparent outcome-especially when value, free towing, and paperwork support matter. Scrapping remains an option for vehicles with no remaining market value, but be mindful of the extra admin and typically lower returns. The key is to pick a process that gets your cash and clears your legal commitments efficiently.
