Learn the sell non-working car Durban process: when to sell vs repair, step-by-step online valuation, free towing, paperwork and tips to improve offers in South Africa.
Step-by-Step Process
Submit details, get an offer, accept, free towing and paperwork handled.
Durban & Nationwide Service
We collect in Durban and across South Africa with deregistration help.
Maximise Your Offer
Provide clear photos, disclose finance and supply service records.
If your vehicle has stopped running in Durban - whether due to mechanical failure, accident damage or electrical faults - knowing the sell non-working car Durban process saves time, stress and cost. This guide explains when selling is sensible versus repairing, how the online valuation and collection work in South Africa, and what paperwork to expect when you sell a non-running car.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on estimated repair costs, the vehicle's market value, availability of parts in KwaZulu-Natal, and how long you can be without transport. Typical triggers to consider selling are high repair estimates relative to the car's private sale value and prolonged immobility that increases storage or towing costs.
| Scenario | Repair cost (estimate) | Value retained after repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor engine work (under R10,000) | R5,000-R10,000 | High - may be worth repairing |
| Major gearbox or engine rebuild | R20,000-R60,000 (estimate) | Low to moderate - often better to sell |
| Accident structural damage | Varies widely | Often low - salvage market preferable |
Notes: figures are indicative for South Africa and shown in R. Repair quotes vary by workshop and parts availability; use multiple estimates before deciding.
South Africa note: Sell Your Damaged Car provides free towing nationwide and handles deregistration and paperwork, making the sell non-working car Durban process easier, especially for owners who can’t move the vehicle.
For a practical overview of what we buy and our service model, see our About / How it works page and the dedicated Sell Non-Running Car page for step-specific details.
The typical process for selling a non-working car in Durban follows clear, sequential steps designed to limit hassle and administrative burden for the owner:
This process is described in more detail on our Sell Damaged Cars page, and the same online flow is accessible from the homepage.
Key administrative items when you sell a non-running car in Durban include transfer of ownership, settling any outstanding finance, and deregistration where applicable. If the vehicle is financed, the lender’s consent and settlement figure are required before a clean transfer can occur. We can liaise with finance houses in many cases to simplify the process.
| Paperwork item | Notes (South Africa) |
|---|---|
| Vehicle registration certificate | Required for transfer; if missing, we advise on replacement steps. |
| Clearance of finance | Outstanding balances must be disclosed; we can coordinate settlements. |
| Deregistration / written-off status | We provide documentation to assist with official deregistration where needed. |
| Damage type | Typical effect on offers |
|---|---|
| Mechanical non-runner | Reduced but salvageable for parts or rebuild; context-specific. |
| Accident structural damage | Larger reduction; buyers price for salvage, safe-to-repair uncertainty. |
| Flood or fire damage | Significant reduction; many mechanical and electrical parts affected. |
After you accept an offer, collection in Durban is scheduled at a convenient time. Towing is arranged at no cost to you and, once the vehicle is collected, the agreed payment is processed. We complete the transfer paperwork and supply copies for your records. If the vehicle was under finance, you will receive documentation detailing settlement and transfer steps taken on your behalf.
If you want to review our general operating model before starting the sell non-working car Durban process, our About / How it works page explains timelines, payment and towing inclusions.
Example: a private owner in Berea with a non-starting 2010 vehicle can upload photos and details, receive an offer, and arrange free towing to a nearby collection point - avoiding multiple costly tow truck calls. For fleet managers in Durban, grouped collections and consolidated paperwork help speed disposals and reduce admin overhead.
If you have a non-working car in Durban, following the sell non-working car Durban process above helps you move from uncertainty to a transparent sale quickly. Using a service that provides free towing, paperwork support and nationwide coverage reduces local logistics and paperwork hurdles common in KwaZulu-Natal.
