How does the online valuation process work?

Submit your vehicle details and photos through our website; we review make, model, year and damage and then provide a transparent competitive cash offer, with final payment subject to a brief onsite inspection.

What documents do I need and will you handle deregistration?

You will typically need proof of ownership and ID; we handle most transfer and deregistration paperwork on your behalf and will tell you about any additional forms required by South African authorities.

Do you buy non-running, accident-written-off or salvage vehicles?

Yes - we buy vehicles in any condition, including non-running, accident-written-off and salvage, and offers are calculated from the vehicle’s condition, market value and provided data.

Do you provide free towing and where do you collect vehicles?

We provide free towing and nationwide collection across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and surrounding areas, with collection arranged after you accept the offer.

How quickly will I receive payment and can you handle fleet sales?

We arrange fast payment (bank transfer or cash at collection) once paperwork is completed; we also buy individual vehicles and small business fleets using a streamlined process for multiple vehicles.

Sell Non-Running Bakkie FAQs - Paperwork, Offers & Process (South Africa)

Overview: Selling a non-running bakkie in South Africa

If your bakkie won’t start, has suffered mechanical failure or is accident-damaged, you still have options to convert it into cash without repair work. This FAQ explains typical timelines, what affects a cash offer, and the streamlined process Sell Your Damaged Car uses - including free nationwide towing and paperwork assistance. Wherever you are in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or a surrounding region, the basics are the same.

Who benefits from selling instead of repairing?

Owners facing high repair bills that approach or exceed the vehicle’s market value.
Fleet managers needing quick turnover for non-running vehicles to reduce downtime.
People who prefer a fast, low-administration sale and want towing arranged for them.

How do buyers value a non-running bakkie?

Valuation reflects the bakkie’s make, model, year, mileage, visible damage, location and salvage demand. Market factors such as spare-parts demand for Toyota, Isuzu or Ford bakkies in South Africa, and current scrap metal prices, also affect offers. When you submit photos and details online you receive an evidence-based estimate rather than a guess.

Repair cost vs value retained (illustrative)

Repair type	Typical South African cost (est.)	Value retained after repair
Major engine rebuild	R10,000 - R40,000 (estimate)	Often less than 60% of repair cost recovered on resale
Transmission overhaul	R8,000 - R35,000 (estimate)	Partial recovery depending on vehicle age and market
Body repairs (accident damage)	R3,000 - R25,000 (estimate)	Recovery varies widely; structural repairs reduce resale potential

Note: the figures above are approximate and intended to help decide whether repair or sale is more practical. For a quick comparison, see our Sell Non-Running Car page for how online submissions are evaluated Sell Non-Running Car.

When to sell vs repair

Deciding whether to repair depends on expected repair cost, the bakkie’s market value once fixed, the time you can wait and emotional factors. If repair expenses exceed a sensible portion of the vehicle’s current market value, selling as-is is often the lower-cost, lower-risk choice. Selling removes towing logistics and admin if you use a buyer that offers free collection and handles paperwork. For more on the buyer’s service model see our About page How it works.

Common owner scenarios

Older bakkie with high mileage and a costly engine fault - selling may be more economical.
Relatively new model with repairable damage and clear service history - repair might add value.
Written-off by insurer - selling to salvage buyers is a common route.

How the sell process typically works

A transparent online workflow simplifies an otherwise complex sale: upload vehicle details and clear photos, receive an evidence-based offer, accept if you wish, then allow the buyer to arrange free towing and handle the paperwork. This model is widely used for non-running vehicles across South Africa, from metros to rural areas.

Step-by-step summary

Submit make, model, year, odometer, and photos.
Receive a clear offer explaining deductions for salvage, parts demand and towing.
If accepted, buyer schedules free collection and completes paperwork.
After collection, payment is released and deregistration support is provided.

Legal and paperwork in South Africa

Paperwork is often the trickiest part when you sell a non-running bakkie. In South Africa, sellers should provide proof of ownership, a valid ID, and complete any forms required for transfer or deregistration. If a vehicle is still under finance, you must notify the finance house and settle or obtain written permission before transfer. Reputable buyers will help with deregistration and ensure transfer documents are correctly completed.

What we typically handle for sellers

Verification of ownership and ID checks.
Assistance with deregistration or transfer to salvage buyers.
Coordination with banks if the vehicle has outstanding finance.

Damage types vs typical offer impact

Damage type	Typical impact on offer
Engine or gearbox failure	Significant reduction; high repair cost and low running certainty
Structural/accident damage	Varies with severity; structural faults lower offers more than cosmetic damage
Flood or fire damage	Often large deductions due to corrosion or total-loss classification
Missing parts or stolen components	Lower offers; value depends on which parts remain usable

Tips to maximise your offer

Provide clear photos from multiple angles, including engine bay and odometer - good photos reduce uncertainty for valuers.
Be honest about mechanical problems; accurate descriptions avoid renegotiation after inspection.
Gather service history and documents where possible; a documented maintenance history can improve offers.
Clarify any outstanding finance before submitting details to speed up transfer.

What happens after collection

Once the bakkie is collected, the buyer completes administrative checks, arranges deregistration if required, and finalises payment. Time from collection to cleared payment varies with banking and documentation but reputable buyers aim to complete these steps quickly. For specifics on collections and timelines, review the Sell Your Damaged Car homepage for process expectations Homepage.

Practical examples from South African scenarios

Example A: A Gauteng fleet owner has a non-running double-cab bakkie with an electrical fault. The fleet manager submits photos and a service record; quick verification and free towing reduce vehicle downtime and administrative burden.

Example B: A private owner in Cape Town opts not to repair after a collision. Selling as-is to a salvage buyer removes storage costs and the need to source multiple quotes for repairs.

Frequently asked procedural questions

Q: Can I sell if my bakkie is under finance? - A: Yes, but you must inform the finance house. The buyer can coordinate with the lender to settle or transfer the debt where applicable.
Q: Do I need to be present at collection? - A: Buyers typically arrange a mutually agreed time; identification and signed paperwork are required for transfer.
Q: Will I receive help with deregistration? - A: Reputable buyers provide paperwork support and can explain deregistration steps per South African regulations. For more on what to expect from a buyer, see our About page About / How it works.
