Find out whether to sell or scrap your engine-blown car in South Africa. Get a fair offer, free towing, and expert admin help with Sell Your Damaged Car.
Engine failure is one of the most serious - and expensive - issues a South African car owner can face. If your vehicle is non-running due to a seized, knocked, or terminally damaged engine, it's time to consider whether selling your engine-blown car as-is or scrapping it makes better sense.
Let's explore how the process works, which route typically offers higher returns, and what to expect from selling to a specialist service like Sell Your Damaged Car compared to approaching the scrap market directly.
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Sell As-Is (to buyer or service) | No need to strip car; Get paid upfront; Paperwork handled by buyer; Free towing possible. | Value depends on demand for model and parts; May require waiting for offer. |
| Scrap/Strip for Parts | Possible to sell valuable parts individually; Immediate cash for scrap weight. | Requires effort; Must deregister car; Uncertain income; Scrap value often low for older models; May pay for transport. |
| Scenario | Estimated Engine Repair Cost (R) | Average Value Retained (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Small hatchback (10+ years old) | R20,000 - R35,000 | 15-30% |
| Mid-size sedan/SUV | R35,000 - R60,000 | 20-40% |
| Premium/luxury | R60,000+ | Varies heavily |
As seen above, engine repair rarely restores full value for most vehicles over 5 years old. It's often more practical to sell the car - even with a blown engine - rather than sink money into a costly rebuild.
South African laws allow owners to sell non-running or mechanically damaged vehicles to registered buyers, but the process must be handled correctly to protect both parties. Here's what to expect when selling through a service like Sell Your Damaged Car:
Private sale or self-scrapping often involves costs (towing, parts removal), time, and risk. A reputable car-buying service offers a much lower-hassle alternative, especially for models with little demand or when you want a quick, secure sale.
To sell or scrap a car with a blown engine in South Africa, you'll need proof of ownership and an ID. Most reputable buyers will also help you de-register the vehicle at your local licensing authority - this step is essential to avoid ongoing licence fees or liabilities after the car has left your hands.
Once your vehicle is collected, reputable buyers either sell parts to the used spares market, dismantle the car responsibly, or export as salvage if there is demand. Your car is deregistered from the eNatis system, and you receive written confirmation of sale and payment.
The decision to sell your engine-blown car or scrap it depends on expected value, urgency, and willingness to deal with admin. For most owners in South Africa, a specialist car-buying service offers a seamless, low-stress route with competitive offers and no towing or paperwork headache.
